Purpose of Position
The Library Associate, Evening Supervisor takes a lead role for overall library building operations and services during scheduled evening and/or weekend shifts. Provides sole staff supervision of library public service operations including circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, public computing, reference (in absence of reference librarian), customer safety, and building and collection security. In addition, the individual in this position participates in outreach activities and works closely with our academic community to ensure that library services most effectively and efficiently support college curricular needs and scholarly endeavors. This is an entry level position. The Library Associate, Evening Supervisor is a member of the Access & Research Services team.

Expected work hours: Monday - Thursday, 3:30PM - 1:00AM.

Qualifications
- Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years library (or related campus) experience is required. Academic library experience preferred.
- Customer service experience. Knowledge of best practices and trends in the profession and in area of expertise. Attention to detail, high level of accuracy, and ability to perform work in timely and accurate manner based on library and community demand.
- Assesses operations and services on an ongoing basis to provide reports and to develop innovative services and process improvements.
- Outstanding organizational, project management, and problem solving skills. Strives for continuous process and service improvement.
- Experienced with standard computing applications for productivity and communication. Experienced with specialized library systems. Ability to adopt, implement and teach new technologies and library systems.
- Ability to document core policies and procedures.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work effectively and creatively in a dynamic team environment.

Responsibilities
Access & Research Services:
• Provides sole staff supervision of library public service operations including circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, public computing, reference (in absence of reference librarian), customer safety, and building and collection security.
• Serves as first staff point of contact for faculty and students and the community at large in the evenings--requiring an ever increasing breadth of knowledge of library services, technology, and the campus at large.
• Resolves situations and problems with individual borrowers relating to lost/overdue materials by interpreting library policy and striving for resolution that leads to an improved understanding of community stewardship for library resources.
• Ensures the proper and efficient handling of library materials including re-shelving and processing of returned materials.
• Creates timely statistical reports relating to use of library collections and services, fulfilling needs of library assessment program and reporting requirements of external constituencies.

Student Employee management:
• Supervises pool of 25-30 student employees, training them in library policies, systems, equipment and procedures; stressing accuracy and the critical importance of confidentiality of library records. • Develops, mentors, and trains student manager-level employees who are capable of keeping basic circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan services operational during times regular staff are not available due to meetings, breaks, or illness.

• Sets and attains annual personal performance goals.

NY Job Posting - Taxonomist

Taxonomist

Scholastic Inc., a large children's publishing and media company, is
currently seeking a Taxonomist to join the taxonomy team in support of
projects that include site rebuilds, content migration, and tagging.
This is a full-time, temporary 3-month position with potential for
extension. This position is located in Scholastic's New York City
offices.


Job Description

The Taxonomist supports the refinement, and application of taxonomies
and thesauri used to support content description, search, and
navigation. Work with taxonomy team, producers, and editors across
multiple site channels to refine the existing taxonomies and thesauri,
documenting the impact of possible changes. Coordinate cross-channel
taxonomy requirements. Communicate with taxonomy team on site taxonomy
issues. Assist with the creation of tagging workflows, standards, and
documentation to be used by taggers and editorial staff.

Qualifications

This position requires the initiative and flexibility to work both
independently and as part of teams to develop new strategies and improve
existing strategies for information retrieval, reflecting and promoting
customer service, using excellent interpersonal skills and
professionalism.

Requirements

*         A Library Science degree or equivalent education and experience

*         Minimum 4 years experience in information architecture, knowledge management, or libraries

*         Minimum 4 years experience and demonstrated success in taxonomy and thesaurus development and management

*         Understanding of and appropriate application of taxonomy and thesaurus standards and best practices

*         Cataloging and indexing experience

*         Experience developing indexing/tagging and/or editorial guidelines

*         Significant experience managing indexing/tagging efforts and teams

*         Experience with content management systems, preferably Drupal

*         Familiarity with web content management, information architecture, user experience, faceted classification, and search

*         Understanding of searcher behaviors

*         Attention to detail and strong organizational skills

*         Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines

*         Curiosity to seek new processes and technologies

*         Strong analytical and communication skills

*         Microsoft Excel skills

*         Background in education or children's publishing and media is a plus

LIBT 1410: Topics in Library and Information Technology

Electronic Resources in Libraries is the focus of the topics class to be offered Fall 2012.

This 1 credit topics course will look at how electronic resources have impacted technical and public services in libraries & information agencies. The course will focus specifically on e-books in public & academic libraries, but other electronic resources and library types will be considered as well, when appropriate.

The course will meet asynchronously online for 8 weeks, though students will be required to attend a live panel presentation (or, if unable to attend, watch a recording of it) during the 2nd or 3rd week of the course.
