HCL Internship: Special Collections - Internship


Special Collections Internship - Manuscripts
Opening Date: 10/23/12

Location: James K. Hosmer Special Collections Department, Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, Minnesota


The Position
Process and describe a manuscript collection.  Interns will gain experience working with manuscripts and special collections materials.  Some work with digitization is also possible.
This unpaid internship is for the duration of one semester, January – May 2013,         8-16 hours per week and can be used for college credit or work experience.


Primary Duties and responsibilities include: 
  • Describing and organizing two collections of 19th American correspondence, pamphlets and other ephemera.
  • Digitization using scanners and/or digital editing software.
  • Preservation work using enclosures and other treatments.
  • Archival storage development, such as refoldering, labeling, etc.
Best Qualified Candidates will:
  • Be currently enrolled in a library program or be a recent library school graduate.
  • Be able to life and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Completed coursework in Archival Studies desirable.
  • Candidate has not completed an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.

The Position
Process and describe archival collections under staff supervision.  Interns will gain experience working with all aspects of archival processing.  Some work with digitization is also possible.
This unpaid internship is for the duration of one semester, January – May 2013, 8-16 hours per week and can be used for college credit or work experience.


Primary Duties and responsibilities include: 
  • Processing newly accessioned archival collections or improving descriptions of existing collections.
  • Metadata creation using Archivist’s Toolkit
  • Digitization using scanners and/or digital editing software
  • Preservation work using enclosures and other treatments
  • Archival storage development, such as refoldering, labeling, etc.
Best Qualified Candidates will:
  • Be currently enrolled in a library program or be a recent library school graduate.
  • Be able to life and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Completed coursework in Archival Studies desirable.

LIT Event: Quatrefoil Library Tour!

Friday, November 9, 6:00 PM (with optional socializing to follow.)

The Quatrefoil Library is a special library that collects and circulates gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer materials and information. Their collection includes books, videos, DVDs, and sound recordings and periodicals.

LIT program graduate and current Q Library Board member, Brian Dahlvig and fellow Board member, Karen Hogan, will lead our tour.

HCL Internship



Preservation Internship

Location:  Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Position
The Preservation team with Hennepin County Library plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term viability of the Library’s print collections through repair and restoration measures, book binding and other preservation methods.  Preservation also performs a consulting function to staff on preservation matters.

This unpaid internship is from October 31, 2012 – January 31, 2012 up to 240 hours. It can be used for college credit or work experience. 

Primary Duties and responsibilities include: 
  • Preservation bookbinding 
  • Construction of preservation enclosures for library materials
  • Simple mending of library materials
  • General processing of library materials including some clerical work

Best Qualified Candidates will:
  • Candidate must have attention to detail and good manual dexterity. 
  • Coursework and/or experience in book preservation helpful.
  • Have not had an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.
