Implementing technologies within libraries can be relatively straightforward – until you start complying with laws, regulations, and policies. Technology: Unexpected Consequences of Legislation and Policies in Libraries will focus on the unexpected and surprising consequences of implementing technologies while also adhering to local, state, and national legislation and regulations.
John Carlo Bertot will begin the conference by discussing how the current information and telecommunications policy legislative and policy infrastructure is rapidly becoming obsolete and how the proposed solutions are creating potential barriers to libraries.

From there, enjoy presentations on the current and potential ramifications of topics like Section 508, the Digital Public Library of America, HathiTrust, the Open Library, digital rights management, the cloud, Internet2, and licensing, as well as policy discussions that incorporate both local and federal issues.

The Duluth Public Library is looking for forward thinking, customer service oriented people to help us expand open hours at our three library locations. Last month the voters of Duluth overwhelmingly supported a referendum that secures dedicated funding for Parks & Recreation and frees up additional general funds for the library. As a result, we are reopening mornings at the Main Library and restoring five-day-per-week service at the neighborhood branches.

The library anticipates hiring four Library Technicians and three Librarian I’s. The Library Assistant 3 position is a member of the Physical Sciences and Engineering (PSE) Department within the Academic Programs Division of the University Libraries. Library Technology Specialist –

This positions works within the Academic Resource Commons and reports to the Circulation and Reference Librarian. Hours may include day, evening and weekend.

Responsibilities include but not limited to: monitor equipment designated for public access; respond to inquiries from patrons relating to computer operation; perform basic troubleshooting routines including resolution of printer problems, loose connections and rebooting systems as required; and to ensure the availability of materials and supplies required in public access areas. The position is also responsible to maintain and enforce computer use policies, and plan and conduct technology training classes for the public, students, and college employees.

Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of one to two years of training experience and installation and maintenance of PC based computer hardware and software required. Knowledge of and experience in an academic library highly desired.

Salary is based on college scale ($11.14 – $12.30 per hour). Excellent fringe benefit package including, but not limited to health, dental, vision, and life insurance, vacation, sick, and personal leave, and the Missouri Public School & Education Employee Retirement System.

Circulation Services provides access to library collections through processing materials, facilitating patron use of technology, and explaining HCL circulation policies to build confident, self-reliant users and fulfill Hennepin County Library’s mission to nourish minds, transform lives and build community together. Pull media (reels, DATs, CDs) from the archive, enter the item’s information into a database, attaching any relevant scans and images to the record

Understand various metadata standards (PB Core, Dublin Core)
Document and report anomalies to Inventory Manager
Track your work and report your progress to the Inventory Manager

A new course is being offered in MCTC's Library Information Technology program, Spring, 2012. The name of the course is "Preserving History & Memory: Archives in Current Society" [LIBT 1400]. This is an elective course in the program that examines the role of archives as powerful repositories of history and memory as well as the role of the archivist as an active agent in the process of shaping our knowledge of the past. In this course, you will look at the traditional functions of archives, which are selection, preservation and access, as well as the roles of archivists and support staff, both in their institutional settings and within the context of the wider society which they serve.

HCL Preservation Department Volunteer Opportunity

One of our LIT program graduates is volunteering at the Preservation Department in the downtown Central Library and tells me there are volunteer opportunities to work on various projects under the direction of Frank Hurley, the head of Preservation.

She writes:
"I have been volunteering there since June, and I really like it. There is a wide variety of tasks, from bookbinding to replacing plastic covers on books. Some of the projects we're focusing on right now are organizing certain periodicals to be sent to a bindery (I worked on issues of Glamour yesterday from 1965-1980 - fascinating stuff), and putting together new folders of sheet music (as a preservation method, a lot of pieces of sheet music in the library collection that were damaged were sent to the U of M for preservation photocopies to be made. Now that we have the photocopies, we have to fold them and put them in new folders, then attach new labels. We end up recycling the original pieces of sheet music, so if anyone is particularly interested in music, they could definitely take some sheet music home). Other projects include gluing loose pages of books back in, replacing the endsheets of books, binding books through handsewing and other methods, and something I'm working on is encapsulating very old sheet music (from the 1860s to the early 1900s), i.e. making plastic cases for pieces of sheet music to better protect the music. There are a lot of really interesting old artifacts that come through the Preservation department.

Who/What: "Turning the Page: 15th National Conference & Exhibition" is the national conference for the AASL, which is the K-12 School Librarian division of the ALA.

Why: Professional development, networking, continuing education, inspiration, etc.

Registration: Well, this is a national conference, so registration is kinda steep. However, you can visit the exhibits for $25 (the exhibits do not include any of the sessions or keynote speakers, just the vendors and tables). Or, you can join AASL at the student member rate of $53 and then pay the on-site student member registration rate of $205 for the entire conference, which comes to $258, which is a better deal than registering for the entire conference at the on-site non-member rate of $455. There are lots of options--including attending for just one day--so be sure to check the AASL Registration website for more details.

“Geoscience Librarianship 101” – a free seminar on earth science
information resources and their organization – will be presented by the
Geoscience Information Society on Saturday, October 8 in Minneapolis,

The workshop is aimed at librarians new to the geosciences and those
already in the field who want a refresher. A team of experienced
geoscience librarians will cover topics in collection development,

Quatrefoil Library (www.qlibrary.org) needs volunteers to help with our barcoding and inventory project. Students who know their way around LC call numbers especially in demand!

Work with a volunteer leader and crew to physically place barcodes on books, DVD’s and videos.

We’ve been working during the hours that the library is closed (M-F 9AM-6PM, Sat-Sunday evenings) in 3 hour blocks.

We have 20,000 items to barcode and expect this project to continue until December.

Physical ability and manual dexterity helpful ( bending and reaching to grab books, handle barcode stickers, push bookcarts) see us for other tasks if needed. Attention to detail a must.

Enid Zafran will present a workshop on the steps involved in editing and polishing your index. something for newer indexers as well as for those with more experience. A hands-on exercise will be included, and there will be time for questions. MLA 2011 Annual Conference

Registration is open for the Minnesota Library Association (MLA) 2011 Annual Conference. The conference will be held in Duluth this year from Wednesday, October 12 through Friday, October 14, 2011. Attending the MLA Conference is a great opportunity for professional development, networking, seeing great speakers/presentations, and more. It also looks nice on a resume when applying for library jobs. :)

You may want to consider volunteering; not only is this good resume fodder, but "enrolled library students" can also get FREE registration for the conference by simply volunteering a few hours of their time at the event.

If you don't want to volunteer, you should register by September 9 for lower "Early Bird" prices. Early Bird registration for the full conference is $175 for MLA members and $250 for non-members. After September 9, those rates go up to $225 and $300, respectively. In order to register in advance, you must do so by September 30. You can even register online.

There are some cheaper options if you register for just one or two days of the conference. You can view all the options here. There is also an online schedule for the conference if you want to look that over and plan accordingly.

We are seeking a dedicated self-starter with good people, organizing and time management skills a strong interest in technology that will be responsible for assisting the Library Technology Conference Steering Committee in the planning of the 2012 Library Technology Conference. The Conference will be held March 14-15, 2012 on the campus of Macalester
College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Library Technology Conference is an annual conference (currently in its fifth year) which provides an opportunity for librarians to come together from around the region and the country to discuss the technologies that are affecting library services; to see examples of what libraries are doing with these technologies; and to allow participants to learn specific skills or knowledge that they can take back and adapt for use within their own library. Sessions offered include
both traditional conference sessions as well as hands-on workshops and cover a wide range of topics requiring varying skill levels. The 2011 conference was attended by 465 academic, public, K-12, and special (legal, medical, corporate, museums, etc) library staff from 195 different library organizations in 26 states.

The position will begin mid-September and continue until early April (total of 30 weeks) averaging 8-12 hours per week with up to 40 hours the week of the conference for a total of 300 hours.

Qualifications

Responsibilities 1. Provides sole staff supervision of public service operations during scheduled evening shifts, including circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, computer lab, reference (in absence of reference staff), customer safety, and building and collection security. 2. Staffs approachable customer-oriented service points in the library, which are a first stop for customers needing help with library collections and services. Has extensive interaction with faculty relating to reserves and circulation questions. Resolves special case situations with faculty that often go beyond the norm of regular or routine situations and procedures. 3. Resolve problems with individual borrowers relating to lost/missing library materials by interpreting library policy and striving for an outcome resulting in overall improved understanding of community stewardship and responsibility for library property. 4. Supervises twenty to twenty-five student employees; trains them in public services policies and processes, including use of essential computer systems. 5. Ensures the proper and efficient handling of library materials including re-shelving and processing of returned materials. 6. Contributes to the development and accomplishment of overall library goals and objectives; provides support to other staff members.

Outreach promotes the use of the library by the nontraditional or under-served user through the development and support of programs and services.

The Outreach Department's goal is to bring the experience of the library and its resources to the community - in their homes, senior living facilities, rehabilitation centers, the correctional facilities of the county and through events held at the library.

Commitment:
One semester, 4 to 8 hours per week, September 2011 to December 2011.

Wage:
This is an unpaid position which could be for college credit or work experience.

Location:
Main work location is at the Ridgedale Library, 12601 Ridgedale Dr., Minnetonka, with some work in Downtown Minneapolis at the Juvenile Detention Center, in Plymouth at the Adult Correctional Facility, and in Minnetonka at the County Home School.

Duties:
Duties may include the following:

Requirements:
Candidate must currently be enrolled in a library program or a recent library school graduate. Applicant must have completed coursework in reference / information services. Candidate has not completed an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.

St. Catherine University is seeking a Temporary Archives Assistant to provide support for the University Archivist and Head of Special Collections from September through December 2011.

Responsibilities: Include processing incoming materials to the Archives and existing materials in the Ade Bethune Collection, assisting users with basic departmental questions, supervising student workers and maintaining access tools for collections.

Duties include: organizing information resources available to students and faculty through the university's libraries and other sources: identify the appropriate bibliographic record for each owned item and attaching our holdings to that record. All materials, regardless of format, received in any fiscal year are expected to be reflected in the online catalogs. Participating in maintaining and enhancing the bibliographic database containing over 2 million bibliographic records and 3 million items are critical parts of this position.

Qualifications: High school or equivalent required. A bachelor’s degree is preferred. Minimum of one year related library experience, preferably in cataloging in an academic institution.
