JOB TITLE: Library Student Employee

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: Academic Year 2016-2017. (Length of employment determined by Student Employment authorization)

HOURLY WAGE: $9.50

REQUIRED HOURS:The library is open 8am-10pm Monday – Thursday, 8am-6pm Friday, and 9am-4pm Saturday. Work hours will decided by availability and the staffing needs of the library.  

PURPOSE OF JOB: To assist the MCTC community in accessing the library’s collection through the use of library tools, and to help maintain the findability of the library’s collection.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Library work-study students are typically assigned to perform the following tasks:
  • Service desk assistance to students, faculty and staff
    • Check material in and out
    • Introductory help with searching the library catalog.
    • Help with basic printing, copying and technical support
  • Collection and library maintenance
    • Shelve books
    • Inventory collection
    • Clean
  • Technical services
    • Process new books and other collection materials
    • Update or withdraw currently owned items
Additional library projects and tasks will also be assigned as needed.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
We will most seriously consider students with the following:
  • Experience with tutoring, especially in areas related to ITEC or BTEC
  • Customer service experience
  • Ability to effectively use modern computer applications, including search engines, the library catalog, e-mail, and MS Office.
  • Previous employment in libraries or other information agencies.
  • Enrollment or completion of INFS 1000.
 LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Student worker will develop  Communication and Interpersonal   skills when staffing the service desks assisting students, faculty, and staff with access to materials as well as daily interactions with library staff.
  • Student worker will develop Technical skills when assisting patrons with troubleshooting problems  involving  computer applications such as MS Office, with printing issues, and while working daily with library software.
  • Student worker will develop Research skills when using the library catalog on a daily basis to search for materials for members of the MCTC community.

Alternative Knowledge How Radical Ideas Are Communicated in Society (MnTC Goals 5, 9)

This course examines the role of dissident knowledge in shaping and influencing a democratic society. You will be introduced to communication theories; the role of propaganda and consent in a democratic society; and how "mainstream" and "alternative" ideas shape our world views. The course will expose you to specific dissident communities and ideas from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries in the areas of politics, economics, and cultural and religious life.

Spring 2017 Registration Happening Now - A note from our program advisor



Hello, Good Library Information Technology Students!
As you’ve probably already heard via a phone call from the Advising Office or from your instructors, Spring Semester 2017 registration is just around the corner. Priority Registration runs from October 24th through November 2nd.
The first date you are able to register  is based on your number of completed credits and can be found in your E-Services account under “Registration Window” (You’ll need click on “Registration Window,” change the semester to Spring 2017 and then click on “Registration Window” again to get the exact date that you’ll be able to register).
If you are a new student, starting in Summer Semester 2016 or Fall Semester 2016, you will have an Academic Advising Hold on your Dashboard in E-Services. You will need to meet with me (in-person or via a phone appointment) so that we can discuss classes and plan your Spring 2017 schedule. I will then lift your Academic Advising Hold and you’ll be able to register when your Registration Window opens!
You can schedule an appointment with me by logging on to mctc.agilegrad.com, by calling the main office at 612-659-6700 or you can stop by Admissions and Advising (T2500).

Library Technician Job at Metropolitian State University

METROPOLITAN STATE UNIVERSITY, a vibrant and growing public, urban university, is seeking to fill a Technical Services Technician position within the Library and Learning Center, beginning December 2016.

Responsibilities:
This position will provide day-to-day implementation and assistance of technical services at Metropolitan State University Library. Assist Cataloging & Acquisitions Librarian with the ordering and receiving of resources. Assist Cataloging & Acquisitions Librarian with the cataloging of new and gift materials. Assist E-Resources Librarian with physical and electronic journals. Contribute to the maintenance of the library’s electronic resources collection and website. Hires, trains and manages student worker(s) in the technical services area. 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and conducting research.
  • Ability to apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials.
  • Ability to operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog information, word-process documents, complete forms and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds.
  • Ability to train, direct and evaluate work of student clerical staff.
  • Ability to assist the professional library staff to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of standard MARC bibliographic record.
  • Familiarity with current trends, standards, and emerging technologies in libraries.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of experience working in a library.
  • Experience in copy cataloging and classification of library materials using Library of Congress classification, Library of Congress (LC) subject headings, machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records, Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2 (AACR2), or RDA.
  • Experience using HTML, CSS, and/or content management systems.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
