We have an excellent line-up of sessions this year that you won’t want to miss! We are also very excited to announce our keynote speaker: Connecting the Dots Keynote speaker Derrick Jefferson American University Library, Washington, DC Connecting the Dots is a conversation led by Derrick Jefferson that explores and examines not just identity, but how multiple intersectional identities engage on both personal and professional fronts. How do these identities work in conjunction? Do they coexist? Work in parallel? Create tension? Or do they collide? How do we deal with these results? And how do they inform how we do our jobs? This presentation will explore issues of justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and labor in librarianship by centering ourselves and our roles in the library.  Derrick Jefferson is a member of the library faculty at American University in Washington, D.C. His research is focused on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion issues, specifically in higher education libraries, and mentoring new librarians to the profession. He was selected as an ALA Emerging Leader in 2015, is an alum of the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship at Loyola Marymount University and is currently enrolled in the Certificate in OER Librarianship at University of Minnesota. He is also an award-winning writer with prose appearing in Tahoma Literary Review, TriQuarterly, The Adroit Journal, and the anthology, Fat and Queer. We are also very excited to announce our keynote speaker: No More Pipelines: Indigenous Knowledge and LIS Keynote speaker Nicola Andrews Gleeson Library, University of San Francisco In this presentation, Nicola Andrews will explore ways in which historical trauma surfaces within libraries, and highlight the tricky balancing act Indigenous library workers undertake as practitioners who are accountable to their Indigenous home communities, and their colonized workplaces. Using a range of industry research, observation, and Indigenous research methodologies, Andrews will give an overview of how Indigenous peoples and their knowledges are situated throughout the library and information science (LIS) landscape, and how we need to look beyond recruitment pipelines for sustainable answers to underrepresentation in the profession. Nicola Andrews is a member of the Ngāti Pāoa iwi, currently residing on unceded Ramaytush Ohlone territory. As the Instruction/First-Year Experience Librarian at the University of San Francisco, she helps coordinate efforts pertaining to student success. She holds a Master of Library & Information Science from the University of Washington, and is currently finishing a Master of Indigenous Studies at the University of Otago. ARLD invites all Native American, First Nations, Oceanic, Pasifika, and other Indigenous library workers to enjoy sponsored registration at no cost to them. Last year, Academic and Research Libraries (ARLD) Day was all about getting users into the library building. This year, we’ll look at serving our patrons where they are. We know they work from their computers at home and in their offices, but they’re also increasingly accessing our services and information via mobile devices. What do libraries need to be thinking about? What services are successful? What technologies and metadata are required to make access easy and understandable? Join us on April 29 at ARLD Day 2011: The Everywhere Library to find out.

The Everywhere Patron
Throughout the world, the majority of people who have access to the Internet are not using a computer. They are relying on their cell phone as their primary interface for listening to music, watching television, reading books, communicating with friends, and finding answers. As phones become more and more capable, fewer and fewer people find that they need their computer on a day to day basis to stay in touch with their infosphere. Libraries need to be at the forefront of these changes, as well as looking forward and preparing for the future of information interaction.

We will examine the upcoming rise of the superphone, the next-generation of mobile phone services, and how the next 3-5 years will reshape everything about information interactions.
