The Future of College of DuPage's "Library Futures" Series

I was disappointed (though, after 9 months of no word about future programming, not entirely surprised) to receive the following email in my inbox today...

Dear Library Teleconference Subscribers,

Since 1995, College of DuPage Press has coproduced the Library Teleconference series with Multimedia Services.  The program featured expert presenters in the Library Sciences and sought to bring together a national Learning Resource community to proactively address evolving library processes, policies and technology. 

Over the years, it has been our pleasure to take this journey with you.  However, financial support for this program has declined significantly despite increased interest from library systems across the country.  We have continued to explore cost saving measures that would allow COD Press to continue to offer this program, but regrettably, we must discontinue the Library Futures program series at this time due to rising costs and dwindling professional development funds among end users. 

We will continue to make past programs available and will consider resuming the program in the future should the requisite underwriting materialize.  It has been our pleasure to be a part of the exploration and learning that has been Library Futures.

Implementing technologies within libraries can be relatively straightforward – until you start complying with laws, regulations, and policies. Technology: Unexpected Consequences of Legislation and Policies in Libraries will focus on the unexpected and surprising consequences of implementing technologies while also adhering to local, state, and national legislation and regulations.
John Carlo Bertot will begin the conference by discussing how the current information and telecommunications policy legislative and policy infrastructure is rapidly becoming obsolete and how the proposed solutions are creating potential barriers to libraries.

From there, enjoy presentations on the current and potential ramifications of topics like Section 508, the Digital Public Library of America, HathiTrust, the Open Library, digital rights management, the cloud, Internet2, and licensing, as well as policy discussions that incorporate both local and federal issues.

It’s difficult to keep up with changes in technology policy, so spend time with us February 8^th to bring yourself up to speed. Early bird registration ends Jan 25, 2012.  Both individuals and groups are welcome. Recordings will be available to all registrants. MCTC LIT program will continue to host the College of DuPage Press Library Futures presentations. However, there are no presentations scheduled at this time. Here is an update from their website:

We are moving our teleconference production studios to a brand new facility. The relocation of College of DuPage’s Multimedia Services department will cause a brief interruption in teleconference production this fall. We are busy planning the finest continuing education and professional development programming to a nationwide community of library professionals for the spring of 2012. Our new studio is well-equipped to bring you the same high-quality programming you expect streamed directly to your facility.

College of DuPage and the Library Learning Network are planning two Library Futures teleconferences this season, beginning in 2012. Dates are yet to be determined. Detailed information on those two programs will be posted as soon as it is available. During this transition, the Library Futures staff is carefully reviewing your feedback from last season in order to develop programs that will be most beneficial to you.
