MN Job Posting: Copy Cataloging and Digital Services Coordinator

Copy Cataloging and Digital Services Coordinator 
Saint Catherine University  

St. Catherine University, St. Paul campus, invites applications for a Copy Cataloging and Digital Services Coordinator to be responsible for the cataloging of the collection for both campus libraries. Cataloging: Cataloging for print and digital collections in CLICnet, WorldCat, and Digital Commons. Oversees the copy cataloging functions of the department staff and students. Creates standards, guidelines, and provides support to others in the department. Performs batch loads of records as needed. Digital Collections: Manages and maintains collections, series, and resources in the Digital Commons repository, Sophia. This position will input resources into the repository. This position is .75 FTE – 30 hours/week.

Responsibilities:
• Catalog of print, media, and electronic resources; includes batch-loading projects, retrospective work, and authority work.
• Prepare and maintain documentation of workflow, procedures, and guidelines for copy cataloging
• Stay abreast of issues, trends, changes, and innovations in the field of cataloging, metadata, institutional repositories
• Create metadata templates, organize series of records, and provide proper metadata to ensure universal discoverability of the research and creative works of the St. Catherine University community
• Supervise student assistants in cataloging and collection support tasks. Includes training in cataloging systems, institutional repository software, and digitization.

Required qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Experience and skill in cataloging and information organization.
• Supervisory experience.
• Advanced computer skills and experience with library tools and systems (e.g., discovery services).
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to plan, coordinate, and provide leadership in the implementation of projects.
• Ability to work productively and collaboratively with a wide variety of library staff and users.
• Ability to work independently with precision, accuracy, efficiency, and appropriate attention to detail.
• Flexibility, vision, and the ability to thrive in a changing academic and library environment.

Preferred qualifications:
• Experience with digital collection services and resources, integrated library systems.
• Knowledge of institutional repository systems (particularly bepress’ Digital Commons).
• Some cataloging coursework completed.

Volunteer and Practicum Opportunity: Shir Tikvah Library

Gain collection management and organization experience in a special library setting! 

 Shir Tikvah is a progressive, Reform Jewish congregation in South Minneapolis, with an active, socially aware, diverse membership. The Library Committee is looking for library & information science program students to help with various collection management tasks such as cataloging, weeding, acquisitions, and circulation tasks. We also are seeking volunteers to help improve collection access by members through signage, resource promotions, displays, reviews in congregation publications, etc. Your ideas will help guide us. 

What you will learn in this special library environment: 
  • copy and original cataloging considerations 
  • evaluation criteria for removing materials 
  • selection criteria for gifts and new purchases 
  • circulation management skills in an open access setting 

What opportunities you have to make an impact: 
  • evaluate and recommend new materials 
  • provide policy guidance 
  • improve collection signage 
  • promote library resources to synagogue members 

Summer volunteer/practicum times are primarily during daytime hours with some evenings as arranged. Academic year open library times are Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings following the Shir Tikvah Religious/Hebrew School schedule. After training, many activities can be performed at home.

Description: Library Technician - This position is responsible for
cataloging Library materials in all formats (books, AV, ebooks, streaming
video, serials, etc.), including batch loading ebook and streaming video
records into the Library catalog and managing monthly updates and deletions.
The incumbent also is responsible for updating the Library's
SerialsSolutions account for ebook and streaming video records. The
incumbent shares responsibility for ensuring that the data in the Library
catalog and other Library discovery tools are up-to-date and accurate to
enable students to succeed in finding and obtaining needed resources.

Minimum Position Qualifications: 
.Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library
reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and
conducting research. 
.Ability to apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems
sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library
acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials. 
.Ability to operate personal computers, use various software and web-based
applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog
information, word-process documents, complete forms and prepare reports.

Preferred Qualifications: 
.Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university 
.2 years of copy cataloging experience in a library within the past five
years 
.Demonstrated experience using OCLC Connexion Client, Library of Congress
Classification and Subject Headings 
.Strong attention to detail 
.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Volunteer Cataloger Needed - MN


Organization: Forecast Public Art
Position: Volunteer Cataloger
Reports to: Program and Administrative Associate
Hours: 5 to 10 hours per week
Duration: June – August 2012 (flexible)

Forecast seeks a volunteer cataloger to assist with the classification overhaul and maintenance of their Public Art Library. Housed in Forecast’s office, the Public Art Library maintains a non-circulating collection of more than 2,000 print, digital, and multimedia materials from the field of public art. With a collection as diverse as the field of public art itself, the library includes exhibition catalogs, artist monographs, journals and periodicals, reference materials, public art maps and guides, and DVDs.

Volunteer’s responsibilities will include:

·      Oversee the physical and digital transition of a 2,000 volume collection into Library of Congress classification system
·      Catalog unique/original items including public art maps, guides, and work samples
·      Process incoming materials

Qualified candidates will be/have:

·      Some experience/education in cataloging and library science
·      Familiar with a Mac OS environment and LibraryThing.com
·      Interest in the field of public art
·      Motivated, curious, self-starter

Position is unpaid, but experience may be applied toward credit or work experience.

Local Holdings Maintenance - Part 1

This webinar will introduce library staff to the basics of editing Local Holdings Records (LHRs) through the OCLC Connexion Browser. We will discuss the implementation of MARC 21 format in OCLC, and demonstrate the steps required to update LHRs. RDA: What It Is and What It Means To You

This information session will introduce participants to Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new manual of cataloging rules designed to succeed AACR2. The instructor will present a thumbnail sketch of RDA's contents, how these guidelines differ from AACR2 and relate to FRBR/FRAD, and what effects these may have on your library catalog. Information on the RDA Toolkit and the U.S. national libraries' RDA test will also be addressed. This is the first in a series of training sessions Minitex will offer on RDA and the RDA Toolkit.

Connexion Browser Module 2: Basic Searching in Connexion Browser (Webinar)

Description: Connexion Browser is a web-based interface for OCLC cataloging, often preferred by those who do lower volume or occasional cataloging, or for parts of a segmented workflow that focuses on searching.

This online module provides instruction on performing basic bibliographic searches using OCLC’s Connexion Browser cataloging software. After completing this web-based training, learners will be able to conduct basic searches for bibliographic records in WorldCat, and evaluate whether a given record matches the item to be cataloged.

This is the second part of a three module series designed to enable basic copy cataloging work in Connexion Browser.

Who should attend?: This course is designed for learners who have little or no previous experience with Connexion Browser, and who may be new to library work. This class will be of particular benefit to new copy catalogers. It will also be beneficial to original catalogers who need to determine, before they create an original record, that no matching record exists.

Prerequisites: Ability to log on to Connexion Browser; knowledge of MARC records sufficient to recognize components such as field and subfield and to identify data such as title, edition, publisher, physical description.

Cataloging Volunteer Opportunity in NY

Cataloging Assistant volunteer position available at The Morgan Library & Museum (NYC)

The Collection Information Systems Department of The Morgan Library & Museum is seeking volunteers to assist in various cataloging activities.

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Database Maintenance, the Cataloging Assistant will create and update records in CORSAIR, the Morgan’s online collections catalog, in OCLC’s WorldCat, and in the local collection management system. The Cataloging Assistant will also assist the Department of Collection Information Systems in gathering and standardizing metadata about collection items, such as exhibition histories and bibliographies. Training will be provided as needed.

Library cataloging background is preferred, including experience with the MARC format, AACR2, authority control, online library systems in general, and OCLC’s Connexion client. Other computer skills, such as experience with Microsoft Access, and knowledge of foreign languages, are appreciated. Work involves sitting at a computer terminal and typing for extended periods of time. Applicant is expected to work independently as well as part of a team.
