MLA 2022 Conference Update

The Minnesota Library Association (MLA)  is proud to announce the speaker lineup for the 2022 Annual Conference to be held October 27 & 28 in Duluth, MN. The conference theme is “Emerging Opportunities” and is planned to feature keynote speakers and featured speakers that will be well known to Minnesotans and library staff from around the state.

The Thursday lunch keynote is slated to be intellectual freedom champion Reanna Esmail of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Esmail’s talk is to be titled “Intellectual Freedom, Privacy Rights, and the Critical Practice of Librarianship'' and aims to bring nuance to questions related to surveillance capitalism, big data, and censorship, while also exploring ways for library workers to promote privacy rights, digital literacy, and intellectual freedom in their critical praxis. Esmail is a noted national speaker on such topics, a frequent contributor to the Intellectual Freedom Blog, and active with the American Library Association Office of Intellectual Freedom.

Friday’s lunch keynote is to be Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page. Justice Page will engage in an open conversation with MLA President Steve Harsin about his career, challenges we face in the modern environment, his career writing children’s books, and the Page Foundation. As a Minnesota hero, Justice Page has a unique perspective on a wide range of issues of interest to libraries of all types.

Featured speakers are to include Laura Erickson, one of the best known ornithologists in America, who is to participate in a panel to address work done at the College of St. Scholastica on their Catalogue of Birds. Also, State Librarian Tamara Lee and Head of Minitex Maggie Snow will address their accomplishments of the past year, the results of a state-wide survey they conducted, as well as their vision for Minnesota libraries. Representatives from SELCO will address a major region-wide community assessment conducted in the SE region of Minnesota. And Scott Libin, with a 20 year career in journalism as a reporter, anchor and producer, including 8 years at Twin Cities Public Television is to address “What do the Ancient Greeks, Pyramids and Toyota Minivans have to do with good communication?” The session is about what you need to do to develop a speech where your message will be heard.

Numerous other sessions will be presented by library staff from around the state. The two-day conference will be hosted at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.  Besides the conference sessions, there will be a silent auction fundraiser for the Minnesota Library Foundation, an event at Glensheen Mansion, an annual business meeting, exhibit hall, award ceremonies and other related activities.

The 2022 event marks a return to an in-person conference after two years as a virtual conference during the pandemic. Early bird registration rates are in effect through 11:59pm on August 31, with regular rates thereafter.

Registration is open for ARLD Day

ARLD Day will be held via zoom on April 30 8:30am-3:00pm CDT. We have an excellent line-up of sessions this year that you won’t want to miss! We are also very excited to announce our keynote speaker:

No More Pipelines: Indigenous Knowledge and LIS

Keynote speaker Nicola Andrews
Gleeson Library, University of San Francisco

In this presentation, Nicola Andrews will explore ways in which historical trauma surfaces within libraries, and highlight the tricky balancing act Indigenous library workers undertake as practitioners who are accountable to their Indigenous home communities, and their colonized workplaces. Using a range of industry research, observation, and Indigenous research methodologies, Andrews will give an overview of how Indigenous peoples and their knowledges are situated throughout the library and information science (LIS) landscape, and how we need to look beyond recruitment pipelines for sustainable answers to underrepresentation in the profession.

Nicola Andrews is a member of the Ngāti Pāoa iwi, currently residing on unceded Ramaytush Ohlone territory. As the Instruction/First-Year Experience Librarian at the University of San Francisco, she helps coordinate efforts pertaining to student success. She holds a Master of Library & Information Science from the University of Washington, and is currently finishing a Master of Indigenous Studies at the University of Otago.

ARLD invites all Native American, First Nations, Oceanic, Pasifika, and other Indigenous library workers to enjoy sponsored registration at no cost to them. ARLD thanks our 2021 Keynote presenter Nicola Andrews (Ngāti Pāoa Māori) for advocating for this initiative. ACRL members can register at the member rate but must create an account on the MLA website at no cost. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about this.

Registration is now open for the MLA 2020 Virtual Conference, September 30-October 2, 2020.

As an MLA member with paid conference registration, you will have access to presentations by the keynote speaker, 5 featured speakers and over 30 sessions produced by colleagues in the library world. All of this is available to you until the end of 2020. Plus, you get an entire year to reap the benefits of membership.

Minnesota Library Association is seeking presentation proposals for the
2012 Annual Conference: “Minnesota Libraries: A Capitol Idea”

The Minnesota Library Association Annual Conference equips library staff with new ideas and tools to stay up-to-date, innovate, and succeed in their careers. A presentation at the conference can have an immediate and lasting impact on local libraries.

The 2012 Annual Conference will be held October 3-5 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sessions will run 60 minutes—a length appropriate for 1-3 speakers. The format of the presentation may include single or multiple speakers, panel discussions, case studies, and/or demonstrations of projects.

New for 2012 is MonstrosiTEEN—a micro, one-day conference on Thursday focused on teens. A teen-related session will be featured in each of the day’s four breakout sessions.

To learn more about the conference and to submit a presentation proposal, please visit www.mnlibraryassociation.org/mlaconference2012. The deadline for presentation proposals is April 20, 2012.

MLA 2011 Annual Conference

Registration is open for the Minnesota Library Association (MLA) 2011 Annual Conference. The conference will be held in Duluth this year from Wednesday, October 12 through Friday, October 14, 2011. Attending the MLA Conference is a great opportunity for professional development, networking, seeing great speakers/presentations, and more. It also looks nice on a resume when applying for library jobs. :)

You may want to consider volunteering; not only is this good resume fodder, but "enrolled library students" can also get FREE registration for the conference by simply volunteering a few hours of their time at the event.

If you don't want to volunteer, you should register by September 9 for lower "Early Bird" prices. Early Bird registration for the full conference is $175 for MLA members and $250 for non-members. After September 9, those rates go up to $225 and $300, respectively. In order to register in advance, you must do so by September 30. You can even register online.

There are some cheaper options if you register for just one or two days of the conference. You can view all the options here. There is also an online schedule for the conference if you want to look that over and plan accordingly.

Minnesota Library Association Conference Coming Up

The Minnesota Library Association's annual conference will be held on October 24-26, 2007, in Mankato. The bad news is that the Early Bird discounted registration period is already over. The good news is there's a not-quite-so-early-bird discount available until September 9th. Check out the conference program at:

http://www.mnlibraryassociation.org/conf_2007/emlaprogram_2007.pdf

Yours truly will be presenting, with Nicole Herold of Ramsey County Library, on Wednesday, October 24, in Session B5 - "Top 3 Cataloging Things to Spend Your Time On." Tom Eland and I will be at an information table for our program as well.

Come spend some time schmoozing with your library colleagues, and network, network, network!
