Hennepin County seeks Homework Hub volunteers

NOTE: This would be an excellent opportunity to gain some hands on library outreach experience.


Hennepin County Library is looking for volunteers to work with youth after school on literacy and homework related projects - reading, math, history, language arts and more. Volunteers must have some experience with school age children and commit to working once a week at a Homework Hub location for a semester. Homework Hub is at the following libraries – Augsburg Park, Brookdale, Central, East Lake, Franklin, Hopkins, Hosmer, Northeast, Nokomis, North Regional and Sumner. Training is provided. A criminal background check is required.

The Preservation department with Hennepin County Library plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term viability of the Library’s print collections through repair and restoration measures, book binding, preservation photocopy, and other preservation methods. The Bindery/Preservation department also performs a consulting and educational function for staff on preservation matters

Commitment:
One semester, 6 to10 hours per week, September 2011 – December 2011.

Wage:
This is an unpaid position which could be for college credit or work experience.

Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis

Duties:
Duties may include the following:
• Preservation bookbinding
• Construction of preservation enclosures for library materials
• Simple mending of library materials

Requirements:
Candidate must have attention to detail and good manual dexterity.
Coursework and/or experience in book preservation helpful but not necessary.
Candidate has not completed an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.

1) Online Resource Support

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in system development using Web 2.0 applications technologies and content management system product development

  • Knowledge of Moodle 2.1
  • Experience with PHP/HTML
  • Experience providing technical support, both hardware and software, to meet department and building needs.
  • Experience supporting applications for mobile devices helpful.
  • Apache experience preferred.
  • Education and/or library experience preferred

MN Job Posting: Library Tech Conference Planning Intern, Macalester College

This is a unique and rewarding internship opportunity for a student currently enrolled in a library degree or certification program.
We are seeking a dedicated self-starter with good people, organizing and time management skills a strong interest in technology that will be responsible for assisting the Library Technology Conference Steering Committee in the planning of the 2012 Library Technology Conference. The Conference will be held March 14-15, 2012 on the campus of Macalester
College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Library Technology Conference is an annual conference (currently in its fifth year) which provides an opportunity for librarians to come together from around the region and the country to discuss the technologies that are affecting library services; to see examples of what libraries are doing with these technologies; and to allow participants to learn specific skills or knowledge that they can take back and adapt for use within their own library. Sessions offered include
both traditional conference sessions as well as hands-on workshops and cover a wide range of topics requiring varying skill levels. The 2011 conference was attended by 465 academic, public, K-12, and special (legal, medical, corporate, museums, etc) library staff from 195 different library organizations in 26 states.

The position will begin mid-September and continue until early April (total of 30 weeks) averaging 8-12 hours per week with up to 40 hours the week of the conference for a total of 300 hours.


Qualifications

Skill Qualifications:
● Experience and demonstrated competency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and the Adobe Creative Suite (inDesign, Photoshop) required;
● Experience with using social media tools, including Facebook and Twitter required;
● Some experience with organizing and creating print publications desired;

MN Job Posting: Temporary Library Associate, Macalester College

The Library Associate, Evening Supervisor is responsible for overall building operations, safety and security outside of regular business hours. The person in this position:

• provides sole supervision of the library during evening shifts.
• is most often the first point of contact for faculty and students on evenings—requiring an ever-increasing breadth of knowledge of library services and the campus at large.
• assures building safety and security during times of low staff presence.
• supervises and trains students in basic circulation practices and develops student managers based on assessed performance and leadership potential.
• requires a highly refined interpersonal skill set as needed to evaluate facts and situations, and make sound judgments concerning people and policies.
• must possess both the technical skills to troubleshoot customer problems, as well as public service skills to resolve problems in a manner understandable to customers.

This is a part-time, temporary position with an anticipated end date of 5/20/2012. The hours include three afternoon/evenings per week (3:30-midnight) September through mid December and late January through May in accordance with the academic calendar.


Qualifications

1. Associate’s degree and 2 years previous library experience required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Academic Library experience highly desired.

2. Experience with integrated library system software desired. Experience with online library catalogs and familiarity with OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing and ILLiad preferred.

3. Able to perform detailed work with accuracy under minimal supervision.

Has extensive interaction with faculty relating to reserves and circulation questions.
