ABOUT THE POSITION
This position exists to support the operation of the library circulation services, with emphasis on the smooth functioning of reserves collection processes. Under general supervision, files, shelves, and circulates library materials, and assigns work to student clerical workers; performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and conducting research. 

Ability to:
  •  Apply and support detailed coding or cataloguing systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials.
  •  Operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog information, word-process documents, complete forms, and prepare reports.
  •  Communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds; to train, direct, and evaluate work of student clerical staff; and to assist the professional library staff in maintaining the library collection according to library policy and procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 1 year of experience working in an academic library, preferably with a customer service focus.
  • 2 years of college coursework or a certificate in library information technology, information media, or an equivalent program.
  • Experience using an integrated library system (e.g., ALEPH and OCLC).
  • Experience working with or serving diverse or underserved populations.
  • Experience giving work direction to others.
  • Strong computer and technology skills – e.g., proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, ability to troubleshoot basic technology hardware and software.

Member Duties: You will be an integral part of creating new programming working with library staff. Position: Preservation Internship

The Position: The Preservation team with Hennepin County Library plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term viability of the Library's print collections through repair and restoration measures, bookbinding and other preservation methods. We also perform a consulting function to staff on preservation-related matters.

This unpaid internship is for one semester June - August 2016, 6-10 hours per week. Hours are available Monday - Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. It can be used for college credit or work experience.

Primary Duties and responsibilities may include:
  • Preservation bookbinding.
  • Construction of preservation enclosures.
  • Simple mending.
  • General processing including some clerical work.
Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • Attention to detail and excellent manual dexterity.
  • Not had an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.
  • Coursework and/or experience in book preservation helpful.

MCTC Choose Your Own Adventure: Grad Expo

MCTC Career Services is hosting an event geared towards students looking to enter the job market!  This is designed for the student about to graduate, but all students are welcome to attend.


The Choose Your Own Adventure: Grad Expo is happening on Tuesday, April 5 from 11am – 1pm in L3100.   There will be a photographer taking professional headshot photos for students to use on their LinkedIn and other social media accounts.  Career Services folks will be running a resume workshop and helping students apply for jobs in an application lab.

The event and photograph is FREE for students.

Job: Library Assistant

Position: Library Assistant III at Olivia Public Library

Job Description: Performs duties associated with running the library on a day-to-day basis and assists patrons with locating materials. Provides patrons with instruction and assistance in the use of library equipment including basic computer instruction. Also assists with planning and implementing library programs and events, especially for children and teens.

Hours: 24 hours per week

Pay: $12.29 - $13.36 per hour, depending on qualifications

Qualifications: Requires high school diploma (or equivalency). Some college strongly preferred, as well as six months of directly related experience; or a combination of education, training and experience necessary to perform the requirements of the job. Applicant must have excellent people skills and be able to interact with a wide range of patrons in a courteous and effective manner. Prior professional experience working with children and teens preferred. Must be able to work independently.

Physical requirements: Requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, light lifting up to 25 lbs., feeling, grasping, talking, hearing and seeing.

The Position: Under staff supervision, process and describe the papers of Lawrence Irvin, a Minneapolis City planner who worked on a number of projects from the 1960s and 70s, including the Gateway redevelopment, Nicollet Mall and Cedar-Riverside housing. Interns will gain experience working with all aspects of archival processing. Some work with digitization is also possible.
This unpaid internship is from June - August 2016, 8-16 hours per week. It can be used for college credit or work experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Processing archival collections or improving descriptions of existing collections.
  • Finding aid creation using Archivist's Toolkit.
  • Digitization using scanners and/or digital editing software.
  • Preservation work using enclosures and other treatments.
  • Archival storage development processes including refoldering and labeling.
Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • Currently enrolled in a Master's Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited program or a recent graduate.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Completed coursework in Archival Studies desirable.
  • Not completed an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.

  • Archival storage development processes including refoldering and labeling.
Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • Experience using digital scanning equipment and MS Excel strongly desired.
  • Have not completed an internship with Hennepin County Library in the past.
