CATALOGING AND METADATA LIBRARIAN I
The University of St. Thomas Libraries announces an opening for a Cataloging and Metadata Librarian I.
This position supports the educational and research missions of the University by organizing, cataloging, classifying, and creating metadata for University resources in local and national databases and institutional repositories. The Cataloger will be:
· Expected to follow best practices in the creation, enhancement, maintenance, and management of cataloging data and metadata that describe these resources, regardless of format;· Have strong interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and a user-focused commitment;
· Required to maintain effective relationships with diverse constituencies of university faculty, students, staff, and consortial colleagues in an environment of rapid technological change.
Primary duties include:
· Selecting, enhancing, creating, uploading, and maintaining metadata for university resources in all formats in local and national catalogs, institutional repositories, and databases following national standards and local practices;· Participating in database management and quality control ensuring the integrity, accuracy and usefulness of the CLICnet catalog and other metadata repositories;
· Participating in, supporting, and implementing the development of local and consortia-wide cataloging/metadata policies and standards.
Education and Experience: The best qualified candidates will have an MLS from an accredited library school and at least one year of library experience. Applicants with a BA/BS and 7 years relevant library experience also may be considered. Academic library experience as well as familiarity with cataloging non-print materials are preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities desired:
· Basic understanding of academic libraries;· Ability to apply thoughtful and intellectually rigorous processes to cataloging and the application of metadata;
· Ability to interpret and apply international standards as well as professional judgment;
· The cataloger should understand:
o information-seeking behaviors of library users;
o content and format of information resources;
o database structures;
o technical parameters and features of online catalog systems;
o principles of the organization of information and knowledge;
o national standards for content and format of catalog/metadata records;
o principles of resource description and retrieval.
