Internship: Library Communications Intern at Hennepin County Libraries

Description

Hennepin County Library is seeking a Communications Intern who will create content for social media platforms, digital signs and hclib.org about resources and services offered by the library, building a collection of evergreen content.
Candidates with a background in English, Journalism, Communications, and Librarianship are encouraged to apply.

This fall internship will be located at the downtown Central Library. It will last three months, September - November 2018, 15 hours per week, with the possibility of extending through the end of December 2018.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position includes:


  • Write content for social media accounts about library services and resources (booklists, databases).
  • Interview staff or volunteers and draft profiles to share on staff intranet and/or social media.
  • Draft evergreen content for social media platforms:
  • Write about media literacy awareness.
  • Describe core library and resources.
  • Write about ongoing library services.
  • Create and update Wikipedia articles about libraries in the Hennepin County Library system.
  • Blog on Tumblr about library history using Wikipedia content.
  • Write Instagram posts about library topics to be posted on a regular basis.
  • Creating videos and taking photographs for social media posts.
  • Other writing and editing projects related to the work described above.
  • Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program; in the fields of English, Journalism, Communications, and/or Librarianship preferred.
  • Experience writing feature articles or similar pieces about a variety of topics.

Ability to:


  • Write succinct descriptions of resources for social media.
  • Research and interview.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Access to reliable transportation to travel within the Hennepin County area to attend training events.
  • Strong writing skills using clear and concise language.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Job: Digitization Technician Newspaper at the Minnesota History Center

DESCRIPTION:  

The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) seeks applicants to perform digitization (from paper or microfilm), to fulfill project requests, and to expand general online access to the newspaper collection.

SUMMARY OF WORK:  

  1. digitize selected newspapers from the MNHS newspaper collection or from external partners; 
  2. process digital files for online access and preservation; and 
  3. assist with administrative tasks related to digitization program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus at least two years digitization experience. 
  • Hands-on experience with digital imaging, scanners, related procedures/techniques, standards, and best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with calibration of scanning equipment to ensure capture of best images, including willingness to  troubleshoot as necessary.
  • Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Access and Excel, as well as Google docs, drive, and e-mail.
  • Physical ability to regularly lift, maneuver, and carry storage containers weighing 40 pounds as well as oversize materials.
  • Physical tolerance to dust and inactive mold spores.
  • Ability to stand for minimum of two hours at a time.
  • Ability to sit, kneel, crouch, reach, bend, and to push loaded carts.
  • Ability to use a keyboard and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills to establish positive relations with other staff and organizations.
  • Flexibility and willingness to shift priorities according to current needs.
  • Ability to meet challenging deadlines and work within complex workflows while carefully handling unique, old, and fragile materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, efficiently, and accurately and to ask questions as appropriate.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with large-format, book, and microfilm scanners.
  • Experience scanning archival collections.
  • Experience in digitization quality control procedures.
  • Experience tracking productivity metrics.
  • Understanding of sustainable processing practices and collection-level digitization strategies.

Job: Library Associate at Macalester Library

Overview

Macalester College seeks to hire a part-time Library Associate of Collections to work as a member of the Collection Development and Discovery team in its DeWitt Wallace Library. This position will provide support in creating and updating records for items in the collection, outsourced binding, collection inventory and maintenance, checking accuracy of URLs and descriptions of our online resources, and processing interlibrary loan requests.

Responsibilities

  • Create and update records in WorldCat--a worldwide database of information about library collections--for items held by the Dewitt Wallace Library.
  • Manage and coordinate outsourced library binding (for example, compiling multiple journal issues into a single hardbound copy). Work closely with outsourced commercial bindery vendors to assure that work and service meets library specifications.
  • Assist with ongoing inventory and maintenance of the library collection. Includes activities such as shelving and shifting books/journals, removing unneeded materials, etc.
  • Assist with checking accuracy and editing descriptions and URLs for online resources.
  • Assists with processing interlibrary loan requests with attention to detail, a high level of accuracy, and ability to perform work in a timely manner.
  • Assist with direction and training of student employees.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, associate or bachelor degree preferred
  • Proficient with computer applications such as email, word-processing, Internet searching, and spreadsheets
  • Attentive to detail, well organized, able to work steadily with a high level of accuracy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team

Summer Internship Opportunity

Subject: Early Learning VISTA Recruitment

 From August 2018-July 2019, SPPL will be hosting two VISTA members. These VISTAS will be part of a citywide early learning VISTA cohort working to make Saint Paul a place where children ages 0-3 can thrive along with their families. SPPL's VISTAs will be working under my supervision on early learning partnerships with all of our libraries, identifying existing partnerships, helping to grow those that have the most potential, and learning from community partners about what their families need and want around early learning.
