Twin Cities Archives Round Table (TCART): Student Scholarship Award

 

Student Scholarship Award

Criteria and Purpose for Selection

This award supports current students in Minnesota and surrounding states who are enrolled in a Libraries or Archives Certification program.  The goal of the scholarship is to stimulate greater participation in professional associations and to provide educational opportunities.

Eligibility

Those eligible for the award must be a student currently enrolled in Libraries or Archives Certification program. They must be a resident of, working, or studying in Minnesota or the surrounding states at the time of application.  Applications will be evaluated based on a brief statement of intent and by the reference contact provided by the applicant. Recipients are eligible to reapply each year, but preference will be given to applicants who have not received the award previously.  

Award

The award consists of a one year membership to TCART and up to $250 in support of tuition, registration, travel and accommodation expenses associated for an archives related class, conference, symposium, or a workshop.  The award must be used for a specific purpose (e.g., outside class, workshop, conference attendance) and not for general education costs. One award will be given per year.

Application Process

The applicant will submit by email the following items.

 

§  Completed Application for Scholarships and Awards

§  Statement of intent (100-250 words)

§  Contact information for a single reference that can attest to the applicant’s interest and need


Supporting documentation, such as a resume or other description of career development, such as volunteer/intern experience is recommended, but not required.

All applications should be submitted to the TCART Officers by  November 15th. The recipient will be notified within three weeks of the deadline.

Selection

The selection will be made by the TCART officers.

Award Recipients

Following the conclusion of the event for which funding was requested, the award recipient must submit a brief (150-250 words) describing their experience and how it was useful to them, along with proof of payment and attendance. This essay will be posted on the TCART website and Facebook page. The recipient will be reimbursed after the class/conference/symposium/workshop. If the recipient is unable to attend the event for which they have applied, they will forfeit the award.

POSITION PURPOSE

As an integral part of the educational process, the mission of the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Library is to provide curriculum resources and access to broader materials and instruction about a variety of learning resources. The College Libraries have a service philosophy which promotes equitable and inclusive access to, and instruction on, information for students, staff and faculty. While our print and online collections primarily support the college curriculum, they also allow for personal enrichment and professional development. The collections reflect a diversity of viewpoints, academic abilities, and cultural backgrounds.

This position provides oversight for the following areas: Circulation, Technical Processing, Course Reserves, and Interlibrary Loan, and assists with hiring and training of student workers. As such, the Library Technician will help foster a welcoming atmosphere by answering inquiries on services and resources, ensuring materials are efficiently processed and maintained, and working collaboratively with library faculty and college personnel. 

The home campus for this position is the Cambridge Campus with some occasional travel possible to the Coon Rapids Campus. The Library Technician will work four five-hour shifts Monday – Thursday, including two evening shifts as needed.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and conducting research
  • Ability to apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials. 
  • Ability to operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog information, word-process documents, complete forms and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds; to train, direct and evaluate work of student clerical staff; and to assist the professional library staff to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with constituents in a diverse multicultural and multiracial community. 
  • Library Information Technology degree, certificate, or related coursework/experience
  • Academic library work experience
  • Work experience using library catalogs and databases such as Alma, OCLC and MnPALS systems
  • Appropriate experience in technical processing, filing, reference, and circulation.
  • Knowledge of inter-library networks, copyright guidelines and location sufficient to coordinate

Call for Poster Presentations! : Twin Cities Archives Round Table (TCART)

 The Twin Cities Archives Round Table (TCART) hosts a symposium annually in the fall (November 1, 2021) called the Minnesota Archives Symposium (MAS). TCART is offering students and young professionals the opportunity to present posters at our virtual symposium in 2021. 

  • Topics must be Archives/Records Management related. While there are no other restrictions on topics, member response has suggested that the following topics are of great interest to our members.

    • preserving scrapbooks
    • born-digital/electronic records management
    • grant writing
  • Posters should be submitted as PDFs and should contain text no smaller than 12pt type and at least 600dpi.

Library Social Worker

This position is employed by the Wilder Foundation with a full-time assignment at Saint Paul libraries. The incumbent is moving out of state. Posting is here. Deadline is Sep 1.

  • The position is a partnership of Wilder and SPPL to address social determinants of health by providing outreach to library patrons who may benefit from information and referral to services such as basic needs, housing, or physical and mental health care.

Library Community Services Coordinator

  • The Digital Navigator positions provide individualized or small group assistance to community members who need affordable home internet service, affordable internet-capable devices, and/or coaching in introductory digital skills to become effective home internet users.

  • One-on-one and small group in-person sessions may be provided depending on library service pandemic levels. 
  • The Digital Navigator’s work is part of the Saint Paul Public Library’s efforts to ensure equitable internet access for all residents, particularly those experiencing lower levels of home connectivity.

General Duty Statement

The Minnesota State Law Library is pleased to announce an opening for a Library Assistant to perform clerical library work.   Work involves performing a wide range of library tasks that support the mission of the library. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Library Division Supervisor.

The work is performed on-site in the Minnesota State Law Library at the Minnesota Judicial Center in St. Paul, Minnesota during normal business hours Monday through Friday. Specific work hours to be determined.

Example of Duties

    The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform:
  •         Shelve library materials.

About the Position Type:

Full-time, part-time, and substitute vacancies are available and will be filled as needed over the next 6-12 months.

In this position, you will:          

  • Provide strong customer service in person, over the telephone, and online.
  • Assist with patrons with checking out and returning materials, accepting payments for fines/fees, issuing new library cards, and resolving patron concerns regarding service and policies.
  • Assist patrons with the use of library technology and resources, including library computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers, downloadable materials, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Shelve books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, and other materials in their proper location.
  • Unpack, sort, and organize library materials from daily deliveries and returns; in some buildings, this requires the use of an automated materials handling machine to move materials with conveyors and other electronic parts.

Need to have:

One of the following:

  • Eighteen months or more of customer service experience.
  • One year or more of customer service experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
  • Six months or more of customer service experience and completion of the Healthcare Clerical Pathway Training program.  
  • Note: Education may be substituted for experience on a month for month (3 semester credits = 1 month) basis.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service in a fast-paced environment with diverse patrons.

Ability to:

  • Bend to the floor, twist, and reach above one's head to put books on shelves.
  • Lift, pack, unpack, and move boxes of library materials, and push book carts requiring up to 20 pounds of push force to move with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Be available for a combination of daytime, evening, and weekend work shifts.
  • Be sixteen years of age or older.

 Nice to have:    

  • Experience interacting in person, over the telephone and online with individuals from diverse backgrounds including people with limited English skills.
  • Ability to use and provide routine troubleshooting for mobile devices, computers, and computer software including Microsoft Office and internet browsers.
  • Experience providing customer service in a reception area, retail, or a similar setting that included accepting payments, answering questions, or explaining policies to members of the general public.

No More Pipelines: Indigenous Knowledge and LIS

Keynote speaker Nicola Andrews
Gleeson Library, University of San Francisco

In this presentation, Nicola Andrews will explore ways in which historical trauma surfaces within libraries, and highlight the tricky balancing act Indigenous library workers undertake as practitioners who are accountable to their Indigenous home communities, and their colonized workplaces. Using a range of industry research, observation, and Indigenous research methodologies, Andrews will give an overview of how Indigenous peoples and their knowledges are situated throughout the library and information science (LIS) landscape, and how we need to look beyond recruitment pipelines for sustainable answers to underrepresentation in the profession.

Nicola Andrews is a member of the Ngāti Pāoa iwi, currently residing on unceded Ramaytush Ohlone territory. As the Instruction/First-Year Experience Librarian at the University of San Francisco, she helps coordinate efforts pertaining to student success. She holds a Master of Library & Information Science from the University of Washington, and is currently finishing a Master of Indigenous Studies at the University of Otago.
