Macalester College seeks to hire a Circulation, Interlibrary Loan & User Experience Specialist to support the DeWitt Wallace Library. We invite enthusiastic, service-oriented candidates who would enjoy working in a highly collaborative, creative, and innovative environment.

Core responsibilities for this position include leading overall circulation operations, interlibrary loan lending operations, and user experience (UX) strategies for library service point and building. This individual also co-manages our service desk, co-supervises ~65 student employees, coordinates library-wide student employment support, and serves as liaison to facilities to support day-time building operations and security. This position does require the ability to open the library several days per week. This position reports to the Associate Library Director for Access, Instruction, and Research Services.

Responsibilities

  • Leads circulation operations including patron support, checkout of all materials and equipment, services, policies, systems, and workflow.
  • Leads circulation functionality development of Integrated Library System (ILS), including loan rules, patron account management, fines and fees, and related analytics.
  • Coordinates, develops, and improves library circulation services via ILS system, providing support for scholarly research needs of faculty, students and staff.
  • Oversees library billing and accounting for patron fines. Resolves situations and problems with individual borrowers relating to lost/overdue materials by interpreting library policy and striving for resolution that leads to an improved understanding of community stewardship for library resources. Liaison to college Business Services office for matters relating to billing/crediting of student accounts, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in exchange of information so as to enable clear communication with students regarding account issues.
  • Shares responsibility with day and evening/weekend service desk supervisors for ensuring excellent overall service desk staffing and daily operations as well as ensuring the building is opened and closed as the daily schedule dictates. 
  • Supervises interlibrary loan lending functions, ensuring prompt processing and lending of materials in support of the scholarly community at-large. Acquires and maintains knowledge of lending functions in all ILL systems.
  • Supports and helps lead user experience (UX) strategies for library service point and building as part of our overall UX program.
  • Helps oversee and support stack maintenance and physical collection shelving and shifting. 
  • Periodically staffs public service points providing assistance and excellent service to faculty, staff, students and community patrons needing help with library collections and services.
  • Co-manages ~65 student employees for the Service Desk operations including hiring, training, scheduling, preparing, and maintaining documentation for student work assignments and policies, and performance reviews. Directs their workflow on a daily basis, including the use of sophisticated library systems.
  • Develops, mentors, and trains service desk student employees on basic circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan services. Assists in training Evening/Weekend library service desk staff.
  • Coordinates day-to-day building, facilities,  and security needs.
  • Creates timely statistical reports relating to use of library collections and services, fulfilling the needs of library assessment program and reporting requirements of external constituencies. Mines computing systems such as our ILS and gate count system to gather data for reporting and process improvement. 
  • Provides occasional back up on all functions of Reserves, and Interlibrary Loan borrowing.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree.  
  • Customer service experience, attention to detail, high level of accuracy, and ability to perform work in a timely and accurate manner. 
  • Experience with standard technical applications for productivity, communication, and data tracking.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of 2 years library (or related campus) experience is strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory and training skills and experience.
  • Experience with specialized library systems.
  • Demonstrated organizational, assessment, project management, process improvement and problem solving skills.
