General Duty Statement

Performs routine and repetitive clerical library work of limited complexity and variety; assists library customers, prepares library materials for use, and returns library materials to the proper location based on established classification systems. Assists other employees at circulation or information desks and may be assigned to retrieve materials. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

Information Specific to this Position: 
The current openings are part-time positions, and applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule averaging 20-30 hours per week. The schedule will include some weekends and evenings.

The eligible list created from this assessment will also be used to fill 
both part time and full time Library Customer Service Assistant I positions as they become available in the Library Department.

Primary Responsibilities: 
  • Shelving books
  • Locating library materials for patron requests
  • Sorting, filing, and replacing library materials alphabetically and numerically using call numbers
  • Helping patrons log in to library computers and use the copy/fax/scan machines
  • Loading, unloading, and transporting materials on a book cart
  • Working with patrons to create patron library cards and records
  • Using library computer systems to check materials in and out, and perform catalog maintenance
  • Participating in branch team meetings

Preferred Qualifications:

Description

The Minnesota State Law Library is pleased to announce an opening for a Library Assistant to perform clerical library work.   Work involves performing a wide range of library tasks that support the mission of the library. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Library Division Supervisor.

The work is performed on-site in the Minnesota State Law Library at the Minnesota Judicial Center in St. Paul, Minnesota during normal business hours Monday through Friday. Specific work hours to be determined.

This is a part-time, permanent position and is classified as a Library Assistant II.   This position will work during normal business hours, Monday-Friday.  Work will be performed on-site in the Minnesota State Library at the Minnesota Judicial Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Specific work hours will be determined when a job offer is extended for this position.  The Minnesota Judicial Branch offers a comprehensive benefits package.  To learn more about benefits, click here.

Example of Duties

    The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform:
  •         Shelve library materials. 
  •         Update library materials with pocket parts. 
  •         Review and redact briefs for uploading to the library’s online brief archive.
  •         Shift materials to other parts of the library.
  •         Shelf reading to maintain correct order of materials.
  •         Use scanners to digitize books, papers, and microfiche.
  •         Perform database maintenance.
  •         Oversee overdue materials including checking the shelves for materials and following-up with patrons who have overdue materials 
  •         Other projects as needed.

Typical Qualifications

Any combination of education, training, and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below will be considered.  
    Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma, or equivalent.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  •         Ability to read and understand English.
  •         Self-motivation and detail-orientation.
  •         Basic computer skills.
  •         Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects effectively and efficiently.
  •         Strong problem-solving skills.
  •         Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  •         Ability to lift and move boxes up to 30 lbs.
    Preferred Qualifications:
Current enrollment in, or completion of a library-related degree program.
Experience working in a library.
