Job Description:

This position will organize the day-to-day operations of the library circulation services, including resolving delinquency/holds disputes; hiring/supervising student assistants; and addressing circulation services issues. This includes the interlibrary loan service, coordinating the processing of the reserves collection, and the direct supervision of student staff.

Hours of Work:
8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (Monday - Thursday)
9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (Friday)
Minimum Qualifications:



Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and conducting research.

Ability to:
-Apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials.
-Operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog information, word-process documents, complete forms and prepare reports.
-Communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds; to train, direct and evaluate work of student clerical staff; and to assist the professional library staff to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.
-Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Minimum of one year experience working in a library
-2 years of college coursework or certificate in library information technology, information media, or equivalent program
-Experience using ALEPH library system and OCLC
-Experience working in an academic library
-Ability to work with diverse communities to provide consistent service to all library users
-Experience supervising work study students
-Advanced computer and technology skills (i.e. strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, the ability to troubleshoot problems related to copiers, printers, etc.)

Duties and Responsibilities:  The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professional for the position of Media Commons Technology Manager. Creativity, risk-taking, and a desire to explore the intersection of new technologies and classroom learning are essential for this position.  This position is a key contributor to the Media Commons’ mission of teaching students content creation and digital literacy skills that are critical for academic success. The Media Commons Technology Support Specialist investigates the development of web design, applications, training, and related technology support that focus on the creation, storage, and use of media in teaching and course-related activities. Reporting to the Media Commons Coordinator the Media Commons Technology Support Specialist:
·       Identifies and evaluates technology solutions to meet curricular and Library programming needs of the Media Commons;
·       Consults with library faculty and key campus IT personnel on the implementation and execution of the Media Commons’ technology programs, facilities, and teaching programs;
·       Designs web-based access systems and storage to support undergraduate students’ curricular requirements in the creation, dissemination, use, and curation of digital media;
·       Pursues professional development activities to expand knowledge and to maintain current with best practices for implementing new technology in support of digital literacy;
·       Teaches workshops for staff and students related to use of Media Commons technology;
·       Investigates methodologies and best practices for creating, promoting, and disseminating student-authored content;

HCL internship - Literacy Activities

The Position
Develop programs, services and resources to support literacy initiatives at the Library. This is an excellent opportunity for students in early elementary education, early childhood development (and related fields), or youth services librarianship to gain real work experience in the field.

This unpaid internship is for the duration of one semester, January – May2013, 6-12 hours a week (variable) for 120 hours and can be used for college credit or work experience. Hours are Tuesday - Friday afternoons and evenings. Saturdays are available as well.

Primary Duties and responsibilities include:
·         In partnership with library staff, plan and deliver programming focusing on children birth to 11 and their caregivers.
·         Develop creative and engaging projects and activities to enhance learning and literacy in a drop-in environment.
·         Assist in creating a safe, respectful, and literacy-rich learning environment in the children’s area of the library; making use of the Family Play and Learn Spot and Discovery Room.
·         Establish supportive relationships with youth and their caregivers.
·         Keep accurate records of participation and prepare reports of activities.

Best Qualified Candidates will:
·         Be a student completing an associate’s, bachelor’s or master's degree.

The Position
The Support Services team with Hennepin County Library plays a vital role with processing and maintaining the collection. Interns will gain experience working with all aspects of circulation and support services.

This unpaid internship is for the duration of one semester, January – May 2013, 8-16 hours per week and can be used for college credit or work experience.

Assist with Support Services responsibilities, including but not exclusive to:
  • Checking in returned materials
  • Sorting delivery
  • Shelving returned materials
  • Processing/shelving customer Reserves
  • Processing new materials
  • Pulling materials from shelves per reports:
    • for remote patrons
    • expired holds
    • non/low circulating materials for redistribution or removal from collection
  • Troubleshoot materials issues: damaged, incomplete audio video, etc.
  • Special projects: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), shifting/location projects, etc.

  • Be currently enrolled in the a Library Information Technology program
