LIT Program Event: Panel Discussion on Saturday, May 9th

The MCTC Library Information Technology department invites you to an End of Year Event/Student Panel Discussion.

Join us on Saturday, May 9th from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. in the MCTC Library's Alternative Press Multi-prupose Space to hear about life after LIT, with specific emphasis on the various educational and career pathways of three LIT graduates.

There will be a social outing to the Third Bird immediately following the panel discussion.

Program Panelists:

Katherine (Kat) Arndt
Graduated from the LIT program in May 2010 and from the psychology program at Metropolitan State University. Kat will graduate from the UW - Madison M.A.L.I.S. program in August 2015. While attending college and library school Kat worked as an intern and full-time temporary employee at the Minnesota Digital Library, and as a reference services intern and an Information Commons Specialist at Metropolitan State University. She is currently working on establishing an internship at the University of Minnesota Digital Conservancy.

Scott Williams
Graduated from the LIT program in May 2013 and transferred to the Metropolitan State University history program, from which he will graduate in August 2015. Scott works as a library technician at the Dewitt Wallace Library at Macalester College and interned at the East Side Freedom Library as a cataloger/researcher. Scott will be attending the online graduate program at the UW - Milwaukee School of Information Studies starting in September 2015.

Heidi Anderson-Ferdinand
Graduated from the LIT program in May 2013 and transferred to the Metropolitan State University history program, from which she will graduate in August 2015. Heidi has works as a public library paraprofessional in circulation. She did two internships in Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at the U of M Anderson Library She also did an internship at East Side Freedom Library and the Walker Art Library. Heidi will be attending the online graduate program at the UW - Milwaukee School of Information Studies starting in September 2015.

This position includes primary responsibility for the successful delivery of circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan services at the Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library. The person in this position is responsible for assisting faculty, students, and staff; proposing, implementing, and interpreting library policies; circulating and maintaining the collections; and opening and/or closing the library. Responsibilities may include hiring, training, supervising and evaluating student workers.

Qualifications: Equivalent to a high school diploma and four years of previous library experience including experience with automated library systems required. Bachelor's degree and experience with circulation or interlibrary loans strongly preferred. The Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA) is the largest of twelve regional library systems in the State of Minnesota. It includes the eight Twin Cities metro library systems (the counties of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington, and the city of St. Paul) for a total of 100 branches. MELSA's mission is to make great metro public libraries better.

The Office Manager is an integral member of the seven-person MELSA staff. The candidate must be an organized, efficient self-starter capable of working effectively with staff and with members of MELSA's two boards (the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board), MELSA teams and interest groups, building management, and various vendors.

While the Office Manager's primary duties are providing administrative support to the MELSA Boards and supporting the functions of the MELSA office, there is a wide range of duties involved.

HOURS: 30 Hours per Week, Monday-Friday
SALARY RANGE: $44,357- $69,308/annum

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Associates Degree or two years of technical training in Office Administration or similar field, AND
• Three to five years progressively responsible experience in office administration.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS BEYOND MINIMUM REQUIRED:
• Experience working with public library systems in Minnesota or other States/Territories
• Experience working with Governing and/or Advisory Library Boards

DUTIES
  • Arrange and implement all aspects for Board meetings (assembling and distributing board packets, reserving/setting up meeting space, ordering meals, etc.).
  • Attend Board meetings and record and transcribe meeting minutes.
  • Attend/support other MELSA team and interest group meetings as needed.
  • Prepare a variety of statistical reports.
  • Develop and maintain historical files.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as working with the delivery service, ordering supplies, managing the office supply budget, and sorting mail.
  • Work with office equipment vendors/service providers to maintain phones, postage meter, fax machines, printers, etc.
  • Answer phones and relay messages, providing courteous and informed answers to inquiries (or routing inquiries to appropriate staff), and serve as the point of contact for visitors to the MELSA office.

The Saint Paul Public Library (SPPL) is seeking an individual who has cultural connection to the African American community in Saint Paul. This position is a half time, grant funded position for two years, through spring 2017.

Performs intermediate level technical work promoting library services to targeted communities of color including immigrant communities. Facilitates and delivers library services with a focus on programs that contribute to children’s literacy development and school readiness as well as programs for adults such as job searching, and digital literacy. Provides direct services in English and/or a language other than English such as leading English language learning, providing translation and interpretation services, and delivering cultural competency training to Saint Paul Public Library staff and the public. Improves the effectiveness of Library communication with communities of color by developing and maintaining key contacts within the Communities. Serves as an internal consultant regarding specific communities of color to Saint Paul Public Library staff.

Essential Functions are the functions that the individual holding the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation. The Essential Functions are identified in the Supplemental Information section of the Cultural Liaison Job Description.

Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License, or equivalent out-of-state driver's license. The driver's license must have no suspensions or revocations for driving-related offenses within the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking-related offenses are excluded.

Must have computer literacy and meet one of the following:
  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of college (60 semester credits) and two years of reference and referral library services experience.
  • A Certificate in Urban Library Services or equivalent certification and one year of library services experience.
  • Four years of experience in a social service agency providing direct client service and one year of library services experience.
  • Four years of experience in a social service agency providing direct client service plus 12 college semester credits.
 Preferred:
  • Experience in a social service agency providing direct client service.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Experience working with adults.
  • Experience teaching.
