East Central Regional Library seeks a Branch Librarian for the Rush City Branch for up to 35 hours per week. A Bachelor's Degree is required; MLS or MLIS or completion of the Minnesota Voluntary Library Certification Program is preferred. 2 years relevant experience is required. General Responsibilities
  • Oversight of an interlibrary loan service including supervision of student workers
  • Library communications and marketing activities across multiple venues
  • Development of online tutorials, instructional materials, and/or Webinars
  • Events planning and implementation

Required Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use advanced features of Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
  • Comfort with computers and ability and ongoing interest in using new technologies, including Web 2.0 tools.
  • Ability to work with member libraries to troubleshoot technical communication issues as they relate to filters, internal server settings, spam settings, and junk email folders.

  • Ability to navigate and use various library specific tools to verify bibliographic citations

LA Job Posting - Processing Supervisor

LAC is seeking candidates for immediate consideration for the position of Processing Supervisor to work on a contract position at an academic library in New Orleans, LA. The primary role of the Processing Supervisor is to oversee the workflow in the Processing Area and to develop and oversee the procedures for the processing function areas supervised. The Processing Supervisor has oversight of the Processing Area, which includes Bindery, Processing, and Shelving with inputs from Acquisitions, Cataloging, and special HTML projects. The Processing Supervisor reports directly to the Project Manager and supervises the Processing Team staff members.

Primary Responsibilities

This list represents the primary duties and responsibilities of the position and is not intended to be all-inclusive.
  • Supervise Processing Area staff (currently Processing staff includes one Shelving Supervisor, one Processing Technician, three Library Assistants, and two Labeling Clerks).
  • Set daily assignments and priorities for all staff in processing area.
  • Provide oversight for Belfor reinstatement portion of the project.
  • Coordinate processing with both Cataloging and Acquisitions Teams.
  • Provide oversight for Government Documents sorting, shelving, and basic inventory of items being withdrawn from the collection.
  • Train new Processing staff members and ensure their following of established procedures.
  • Provide ongoing quality control (QC) to ensure that all processed materials accurately follow our client's processing documentation.
  • Trouble-shoot problems, and handle difficult or problematic items including obtaining and implementing judgments as to best practices for unique items.
  • Perform standard processing and/or labeling tasks to maintain workflow, as is necessary.
  • Provide semi-monthly reports to LAC Project Manager regarding work and progress made by Processing Area staff.
  • Write and maintain procedure manuals for assigned special projects and for specific tasks.
  • Prepare shipments to HTML and oversee remote shelving.
  • Participate in meetings with our client's principal points of contact, as needed, with regards to updates on the Processing Area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a library setting performing tasks related to circulation, shelving, or physical processing.
  • Prior supervisory experience, and an effective management style.
  • Prior experience training and orienting employees.
  • Ability to use metrics effectively and to link staff duties to project goals.
  • Ability to work in a production-driven environment with constantly shifting priorities and demands.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Voyager or other library integrated system (ILS).
  • Knowledge of Dewey, LC, and SuDoc classification schemes.
  • Experience in an academic library.

MN Internship: Hennepin County Library

Library Outreach Services Internship
Hennepin County Library

Outreach promotes the use of the library by the nontraditional or under-served user through the development and support of programs and services.

The Outreach Department’s goal is to bring the experience of the library and its resources to the community - in their homes, senior living facilities, rehabilitation centers, the correctional facilities of the county and through events held at the library.

Commitment:
One semester, 4 to 8 hours per week, beginning January 2010.

Wage:
This is an unpaid position which could be for college credit or work experience.

Location:
Main work location is at the Ridgedale Library, 12601 Ridgedale Dr., Minnetonka, with some work in Downtown Minneapolis at the Juvenile Detention Center, in Plymouth at the Adult Correctional Facility, and in Minnetonka at the County Home School.

Duties:
Duties may include the following:
  • Assist at outreach events aimed at first generation library users
  • Assist in classifying / organizing Adult Correctional Facility collection
  • Assist in compiling and analyzing data for Adult Correctional Facility programs and Deposit Collection booktalking program
  • Assist in creating documents for use in Large Print book club kits, including writing book discussion questions
  • Assist in implementation of resource workshops at Adult Correctional Facility
  • Assist in the creation, implementation and evaluation of a reading interest survey for use with the Deposit Collection sites, at the Adult Correctional Facility, and at the County Home School
  • Assist in weekly filling of information requests from Adult Correctional Facility

MN Internship: Minnesota Historical Society

Description:

The Minnesota Historical Society holds one of the most complete collections of Minnesota newspapers in the world. The collection dates from 1849 to the present day, and includes not only daily and weekly newspapers from all over the state but also current and historic newspapers published by schools, churches, prisons, ethnic, immigrant, and other special-interest organizations. Much of the collection is preserved on microfilm and is heavily used by genealogists and historians. The Minnesota Historical Society is beginning its third year of an ongoing project to migrate our newspaper holdings from a legacy database to our library catalog. The Minnesota Historical Society currently seeks an intern to continue the work on the project by creating and editing item and holdings records in the online library catalog using ALEPH, the library’s ILS software. The intern will also be responsible for compiling statistics and documenting procedures.

Primary responsibilities:

· Use the ALEPH software to create item-level records for newspaper microfilm titles and to edit bibliographic and holdings records, as necessary.

· Replace worn boxes and re-label as necessary.

· Work with library processing staff to resolve any problems.

· Compile statistics and lists of missing microfilm reels.

· Document procedures and workflows.

Minimal qualifications:

· General knowledge of MARC coding and tagging sufficient to create and edit item level records. The intern should also understand the structure and relationships of MARC bibliographic and holdings records, so that the correct information is added to the correct record.

· Keyboarding skills sufficient to input records accurately.

· Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software for creation of reports and compilation of statistics.

· Attention to detail

Training and Orientation:

The Library Processing Manager and the Serials Processing Assistant will provide training and orientation to using the ALEPH software and the MnPALS library catalog.

Shared Value:

This position will make an important contribution towards making the library’s newspaper collection discoverable in MnPALS, the library catalog. It will also provide the intern with an opportunity for direct experience in using cataloging software to create and edit item and holdings records.

Hours and availability:

10-15 hours a week for 12-15 weeks. Scheduling is flexible between the hours of 8-5, Monday-Friday. The internship is unpaid. All interns must pass a background check.

An Evening of “Read Dating”

Are you reading so much that dating has fallen by the wayside? Then come join us for an evening of Read Dating!

Looking for good times as well as good books? Maybe you should try “Read Dating!” It’s like speed-dating, only we’ll use books to help break the ice with other like-minded dateable bibliophiles.

The first round is a mixer. Participants will draw a question such as “What was your favorite book as a teen?” and mingle around the room asking their question of other participants. The second round will be timed dating, when daters will discuss their favorite books (no more than three) in a one-to-one setting for a few minutes before moving to a new literary partner. At the end of the night, if like literary minds want to match up… well, that would be up to them.

The event is suitable for single men and women. Please bring a book you love, hate, have recently read, or just want to talk about.

Well talk about how to tell your story with social media.

Ann Treacy is a former librarian with 13 years of experience working with businesses and other organizations to get their message to prospective clients on the Internet. She works with resorts, realtors, manufacturers, nonprofits and others throughout Minnesota to develop Internet and social media strategies to meet business goals.

Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with important functions at the MLA Conference on October 14-16, 2009 in St. Cloud. The overall success of the conference depends not only on the quality of its programs, which are excellent, but on the efficiency and effectiveness of its arrangements. As in years past, numerous volunteers are needed to insure that everything goes smoothly in busy areas such as Registration and the Silent Auction. Please consider giving two hours of your time during the conference to helping with these important tasks.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Meg Smith will share stories of how the Washington Post has used social networking sites in investigative reporting. She’ll show us how to connect a social networking profile to the real-world person behind it, how to spot fake profiles, and how to expertly search social networking sites in order to find individuals who may be hiding, or whose names you might not know. (We’ll even get tips on how to search social networking web sites that haven't been invented yet!)

There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions during the presentation, but Meg will be happy to take comments in advance so she can tailor this presentation to our audience. Please send questions to Julie or Karen at the email addresses above.

Presenter Bio

Meg Smith is the Washington Post's local researcher. She was the lead researcher for the paper's coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting in 2008 and was a landmark for how the newspaper used social networking sites to report the news. For the Post's "Forced Out" series, which won the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting in 2009, Meg backsearched hundreds of land transactions on new condominiums, and used public records to find the owners of dozens of shadowy limited-liability companies that were shielding landlords who exploited loopholes in the city's housing laws.

Meg has also researched several other in-depth series and investigations including the paper's relentless pursuit of the perpetrators of the District's Office of Tax and Revenue fraud scheme, one of the largest municipal frauds in history, and the groundbreaking and data-rich multimedia series, "Being a Black Man," in 2006. Meg has a Bachelors in Journalism and an MLS from the University of Maryland, and has been at the Post since 2000. She has been a member of the Washington DC chapter of SLA since 2003.
