Unpaid Internships: ALEPH Data Cleanup

The first member of the MNPALS consortium to request internships has contacted MCTC and they are looking for LIT program students (current or graduated).  Some things to consider: it’s unpaid and in Cambridge MN, but it’s really flexible, has a variety of opportunities and you could just commit to one week in order to fulfill the requirement.  Here’s the blurb:

The library on the Cambridge campus of Anoka-Ramsey Community College is seeking an intern to help with a large clean-up of the library’s catalog.  The internship will be unpaid and for the duration of 20 hours. The schedule is fairly flexible; hours can be completed anytime within the hours following:

Mondays 8:00AM-7:30PM
Tuesdays 9:30AM-8:00PM
Wednesdays 8:00AM-3:00PM
Thursdays 9:30AM-8:00PM.

Duties may include:
·       Scanning of items for inventory
·      Fixing errors in catalog records using ALEPH
·       Checking materials in and out to students
·       Answering reference questions
·       Assisting students with locating appropriate library resources
·      Other library related duties as assigned

Qualifications:
·      Enrollment in a Library Science or Library Tech program

Job Description:

This position will organize the day-to-day operations of the library circulation services, including resolving delinquency/holds disputes; hiring/supervising student assistants; and addressing circulation services issues. This includes the interlibrary loan service, coordinating the processing of the reserves collection, and the direct supervision of student staff.

Hours of Work:
8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (Monday - Thursday)
9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (Friday)
Minimum Qualifications:

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS

Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and conducting research.

Ability to:
-Apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials.
-Operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog information, word-process documents, complete forms and prepare reports.
-Communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds; to train, direct and evaluate work of student clerical staff; and to assist the professional library staff to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.
-Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.


Preferred Qualifications:

-Minimum of one year experience working in a library
-2 years of college coursework or certificate in library information technology, information media, or equivalent program
-Experience using ALEPH library system and OCLC
-Experience working in an academic library
-Ability to work with diverse communities to provide consistent service to all library users
-Experience supervising work study students
-Advanced computer and technology skills (i.e. strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, the ability to troubleshoot problems related to copiers, printers, etc.)
