Job Description: The Library Technician works under the direction of the Medical Librarian to meet the information needs of North Memorial physicians, employees, leaders, patients and their families, and affiliated students through a variety of methods of delivery and access. The Library Technician contributes to the provision of information services to support the clinical and business operations of North Memorial.

Job Description:

This position will work about 10-15 hrs a week, for 6 months.

Help support the clerical, technical and administrative needs of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) Library, a specialized information center providing services and resources for DEED staff and partners. DEED is the state's principal economic development agency and its programs promote business recruitment, expansion, and retention; international trade; workforce development; and community development. Duties:

1. Assist librarian with collection management.
2. Oversee library facility, maintaining computers and other equipment.
3. Update library's website.

Please note that this position would initially be set up for 6 months, with the possibility of an extension, up to 36 months.
Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of two (2) to three (3) years of post-secondary education in library and information science.
Must be able to work 10-15 hours per week.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Working knowledge of computer and software, such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to interact with clients and staff in a courteous, pleasant and professional manner.

(Note: To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker, you must be a student enrolled in an educational program or planning to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as student workers, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. For this vacancy, students must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate program. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution he/she must carry at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institutin or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.)

(At this level-- Student Worker, Para-Professional-Senior--students have generally completed at least 2-3 years of post-secondary education related to the program in which they are employed.)
Preferred Qualifications:

Web design and library experience.
Familiarity and understanding of library systems Aleph and OCLC for interlibrary loan, basic cataloging and periodicals managment.
Attention to detail.

HCL Summer Internship



Literacy Activities Intern

The Position
Develop programs, services, and resources to support literacy initiatives at the Library. This is an excellent opportunity for students in early elementary education, early childhood development (and related fields), or youth services librarianship to gain real work experience in the field.

This unpaid internship is for the summer, June – August 2014, 8-12 hours a week (variable) for 120 hours and can be used for college credit or work experience. Hours are Monday - Friday afternoons and evenings. Saturdays are available as well.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:
·      In partnership with library staff, plan and deliver programming focusing on children from birth to 11 and their caregivers.
·      Develop creative and engaging projects and activities to enhance learning and literacy in a drop-in environment.
·      Assist in creating a safe, respectful, and literacy-rich learning environment in the children’s area of the library; making use of the Family Play and Learn Spot and Discovery Room.
·      Establish supportive relationships with youth and their caregivers.
·      Keep accurate records of participation and prepare reports of activities.
·      Library school students given additional duties involving children’s collection maintenance.

Best-Qualified Candidates will:
·      Be a student completing an associate’s, bachelors, or master's degree in an Education-related field or Library Science.
·      Be creative, reliable, patient, adaptable, and possess the ability to approach and engage youth on a one-to-one basis.
·      Possess a strong commitment to literacy and libraries.
   Have not previously completed an internship with Hennepin County Library.
