We are looking for an Archives Assistant to help process a
large archival collection as part of a grant-funded project. The Adath
Jeshurun Collection resides within the Nathan and Theresa Berman Upper
Midwest Jewish Archives, an important collection that chronicles Jewish
history, communities, religion and culture in the Upper Midwest Region.
Duties: Process archives and manuscript collections and prepare descriptive finding aids according to national professional standards and local practice • Physical re-foldering and minimal-level processing of archival materials including correspondence, ephemera, photographs, and media • Continue to follow established arrangement and description plans for collection while offering suggestions on processing, taking into account physical processing needs, and determining appropriate level of description for collection • Create EAD (Encoded Archival Description) finding aids utilizing XMetaL, as well as potential entry of descriptive data into internal spreadsheets and databases • Conduct research and write biographical and historical descriptions of organizations, persons, activities, and programs and summaries of collection contents suitable for publications on the Archives and Special Collections website Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred (Library Science). Professional experience working within a library, archives, or museum is a must. Strong attention to detail is important. Must be able to lift 30 lb. boxes. Knowledge of EAD finding aids and use of XMetaL or oXygen preferred. You will be working on-site in the Elmer L. Andersen Library on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota. The work will be supervised by the Assistant Archivist of the Upper Midwest Jewish Archives. Hours can be flexible and may vary from 10-20 hours/week. Once the collection is processed the project is completed, with a final end date no later than May 2014.
