Internship: Library Communications Intern at Hennepin County Libraries

Description

Hennepin County Library is seeking a Communications Intern who will create content for social media platforms, digital signs and hclib.org about resources and services offered by the library, building a collection of evergreen content.
Candidates with a background in English, Journalism, Communications, and Librarianship are encouraged to apply.

This fall internship will be located at the downtown Central Library. It will last three months, September - November 2018, 15 hours per week, with the possibility of extending through the end of December 2018.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position includes:


  • Write content for social media accounts about library services and resources (booklists, databases).
  • Interview staff or volunteers and draft profiles to share on staff intranet and/or social media.
  • Draft evergreen content for social media platforms:
  • Write about media literacy awareness.
  • Describe core library and resources.
  • Write about ongoing library services.
  • Create and update Wikipedia articles about libraries in the Hennepin County Library system.
  • Blog on Tumblr about library history using Wikipedia content.
  • Write Instagram posts about library topics to be posted on a regular basis.
  • Creating videos and taking photographs for social media posts.
  • Other writing and editing projects related to the work described above.
  • Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program; in the fields of English, Journalism, Communications, and/or Librarianship preferred.
  • Experience writing feature articles or similar pieces about a variety of topics.

Ability to:


  • Write succinct descriptions of resources for social media.
  • Research and interview.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Access to reliable transportation to travel within the Hennepin County area to attend training events.
  • Strong writing skills using clear and concise language.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
