Position: Technical Services Specialist
 Library: Carleton College

Description: The Gould Library welcomes applications for a full time
Technical Services Specialist. This position works towards achieving Library
goals by efficiently organizing and presenting library collections; making
resources accessible to the College and broader communities; working
collaboratively with Technical Services staff to meet routine needs, solve
problems, and devise new ways to achieve goals throughout the department;
participating in departmental, Library and consortium committees and
meetings; and working closely with Loan Services and Reference & Instruction
staff to ensure accuracy of online catalog records and accessibility of
materials.

This is a full time position, scheduled between the hours of 7:00 am and
6:00 pm, that is eligible for the College's benefits package. 

Essential Responsibilities: 
.Periodicals: Train students to check in new periodicals; monitor their work
and resolve problems. Coordinate sending/receiving of periodicals and other
materials to be bound. Work with Loan Services to insure accurate shelving
of periodicals. 
.Cataloging and Database Maintenance: Perform copy cataloging for books and
videos that meet specified criteria. Review and edit bibliographic records
added to the library's online catalog to meet national standards, as well as
local conventions. Add item-specific information regarding local holdings,
location, gift data, and special handling. Manage withdrawal, replacement,
and transfer of items from one location/collection to another, including
updating information in the Library's integrated library system (ILS). Work
closely with Reference & Instruction and Loan Services staff to resolve
cataloging inconsistencies and problems as they arise. 
.Processing [shelf preparation]: Train and oversee student workers in the
physical processing of materials. Coordinate flow of new materials through
cataloging, physical processing, and dispersing of materials to their proper
locations. 
.Government Documents: Receive new Carleton government documents cataloged
by St. Olaf staff. Assist in maintaining accuracy of bibliographic records
for documents in the Library's integrated library system (ILS). Withdraw
superseded volumes, handle errata sheets and other corrections and
coordinate maintenance of the physical documents collection with Loan
Services staff. 
.Supplies Inventory: Maintain an inventory of specialized supplies used in
Technical Services. Monitor supplies on hand to insure that quantities are
adequate for ongoing work. Assess annual needs and order when needed. 
.Supervision: Hire, train and monitor the work of student workers for
specific tasks. Participate in evaluation of student workers, in
collaboration with other staff. Prepare and update training materials, as
needed. 
.Projects: Manage projects related to the work responsibilities above. 
.Staff development: Participate in staff development events and other
training sessions. Attend specialized workshops on cataloging and related
skills. 
.Bridge Consortium: This position also supports the Bridge Consortium and
works collaboratively and in tandem with peers at the St. Olaf College
Libraries to ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained
or reduced. Additionally, this position may be asked to provide services to
the St. Olaf College Libraries, and will participate in all appropriate
Bridge working groups, meetings, and functions.

Required Qualifications: 
.Bachelor's degree. 
.Ability to manage complex and detailed information with a high level of
accuracy. 
.Computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office programs; basic
email and internet searching skills; and familiarity with the use and
function of databases. 
.Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly-changing environment. 
.Willingness to learn new tasks and skills, including a variety of software
and computer systems. 
.Cooperative service attitude and strong interpersonal skills when working
with coworkers and the public. 
.Demonstrated initiative to solve problems independently and in
collaboration with others. 
.Ability to train, supervise and coach student workers for effective
results. 
.Ability to physically lift and carry 15 lbs.

Desired Qualifications: 
.Library experience, preferably in a liberal arts college setting. 
.Experience using an integrated library system (ILS), such as III or Aleph. 
.OCLC copy cataloging experience. 
.Previous supervisory experience.
