Position: Circulation Assistant (Evenings)
Library: Minneapolis College of Art and Design
Description: PRIMARY FUNCTION: As the sole library staff
member in the evenings, circulates Library materials to Library users and
maintains circulation records. Answers questions on the use of the Library
collection, and general reference questions. Assists in the use of the
equipment and software in the Library. Works on course reserves and
inter-library loan with the assistance of the Circulation Coordinator. During
the academic year, works evening hours and closes the Library. Regular, on-time
attendance is mandatory. Please see below for special hours for this position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accurately
circulates a variety of Library materials, including books, periodicals, class
reserve items and audio- visual material to students, faculty, staff and other
authorized borrowers. Makes assessment of condition of circulating material,
passing items on to repair, replacement or re-shelving.
Performs other
circulation duties such as collecting payments for overdue, damaged, or lost
material and creating patron records for new users.
Instructs
patrons on the use of Library materials and assists in locating items. Provides
answers to reference questions, or refers questions to the Public Services
Librarian.
Instructs
patrons in use of library equipment, including copier, printer, scanning, and
video capture. Troubleshoots computer-related questions and problems.
Maintains
communication with other circulation staff. Ensures consistent application of
Library policies and procedures.
With assistance
of the Circulation Coordinator, manages Course Reserves.
Processes
interlibrary loan requests.
Coordinates
library displays and promotions, including various social media.
Assists in a
variety of other Library areas, which may include shelving, copy cataloging,
and assisting other library staff with projects.
Supervises
student workers, as needed, during evening hours.
Serves as a
back-up circulation assistant for other staff absences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School diploma, or equivalent. College
coursework in art, design and library science preferred.
Experience: A minimum of one year of library work
experience, including circulation. Work experience using Aleph system desired.
Skills: Dependable, responsible, service-oriented person,
able to work independently. Versatility and adaptability is crucial. Must be
able to work under pressure and maintain good rapport with students, faculty,
and staff.
Hours: Academic year: Monday-Thursday 1:30 p.m. to 10:00
p.m., and during the last 2 weeks of each semester 3:00pm to midnight. Summer
and College
vacations: 20 hours per week arranged with supervisor.
Regular, on-time attendance is mandatory.
