Minimum/Essential Qualifications:
- High School diploma/GED
- Five years relevant library experience. College education can be substituted for experience on a year for year basis up to three years.
- Relevant supervisory experience
- Relevant customer service experience

- Experience working in an academic law library
- Demonstrated commitment to a strong service philosophy
- Demonstrated communication, marketing, and problem solving skills
- Experience with management of legal materials, including looseleaf services
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and independently prioritize multiple and competing work assignments
- Demonstrated ability to maintain established work standards and procedures, as well as adapt easily to procedural changes
- Knowledge of legal bibliographic and citation formats

Overview:
The Library Assistant III supports the operations of the University of Minnesota Law Library Circulation Department.
Responsibilities:
- 40% Circulation Desk Operation and Department Management Assistance: Supervise and maintain the routine operation of the Circulation Desk. Open and manage the library circulation and reserves desk during scheduled times. Staff the Circulation Desk for at least fifteen hours per week during designated times, and other times as needed for coverage. Respond to user inquiries pertaining to law library services and policies. Independently determine where to direct patrons to library services, areas of collection, or other departments to best suit their needs. Supervise and maintain study room reservations page. Respond to reserve collection requests. Respond, as appropriate, to patron concerns regarding situations affecting the safety, security, and usability of the Law Library. Promptly resolve customer service problems and relay concerns to other Law Library staff as appropriate. Instruct and assist users in the operation of reference computers, photocopiers, Gopher Gold dispenser, microfilm/fiche reader/printer and other equipment as needed. Maintain department operations and respond to patron inquiries in the absence of the Access Services Librarian.
- 25% Departmental Student Employee Management: Hire, train, and supervise library circulation desk student employees in consultation with the Access Services Librarian. Manage student employee scheduling, organize workflow, and oversee staffing of the circulation desk. Design, implement, and execute training/orientation program for student employees. Maintain and update circulation desk procedure manuals. Instill importance of strong customer service attitudes upon student employees and act as a model of good service. Conduct performance reviews with circulation department student employees and, in consultation with the Access Services Librarian, make recommendations for promotion of student employees. Responsible for taking appropriate disciplinary action or terminating student assistants, in consultation with the Access Services Librarian.
- 10% Looseleaf Collection Management: Responsible for administration and management of the looseleaf collection. Coordinate with Acquisitions Department regarding missing materials and ordering updated materials. Frequently check the online library system to monitor status updates for looseleaf supplements. Prioritize filing, organization, and distribution of looseleaf periodicals. Personally handle and respond to issues associated with foreign language and problematic sets. Train and supervise staff and student employees in filing looseleaf supplements, emphasizing importance of accuracy.
- 5% Library Communications: Maintain circulation department bulletin board which advertises new materials and library announcements. Collaborate with the Access Services Librarian on other library marketing and communications as requested.
- 5% Library Events: Plan law library-hosted events in collaboration with the Access Services Librarian. Oversee and facilitate decorations, setup, and cleanup of events with help of other circulation department staff and student assistants.
- 15% Other: Manage patron statistics information and conduct periodical patron counts. Manage and update faculty SSRN pages. Assist with occasional website update projects. Assist with course reserves and faculty TWEN sites as necessary. Conduct weekly library facility walk-through with Access Services Librarian. Assist with book repair and other cross-departmental projects as needed.
