The Library Associate, Evening Supervisor is responsible for overall building operations, safety and security outside of regular business hours. The person in this position:
• provides sole supervision of the library during evening shifts.
• is most often the first point of contact for faculty and students on evenings—requiring an ever-increasing breadth of knowledge of library services and the campus at large.
• assures building safety and security during times of low staff presence.
• supervises and trains students in basic circulation practices and develops student managers based on assessed performance and leadership potential.
• requires a highly refined interpersonal skill set as needed to evaluate facts and situations, and make sound judgments concerning people and policies.
• must possess both the technical skills to troubleshoot customer problems, as well as public service skills to resolve problems in a manner understandable to customers.
This is a part-time, temporary position with an anticipated end date of 5/20/2012. The hours include three afternoon/evenings per week (3:30-midnight) September through mid December and late January through May in accordance with the academic calendar. |
Responsibilities 1. Provides sole staff supervision of public service operations during scheduled evening shifts, including circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, computer lab, reference (in absence of reference staff), customer safety, and building and collection security.
2. Staffs approachable customer-oriented service points in the library, which are a first stop for customers needing help with library collections and services. Has extensive interaction with faculty relating to reserves and circulation questions. Resolves special case situations with faculty that often go beyond the norm of regular or routine situations and procedures.
3. Resolve problems with individual borrowers relating to lost/missing library materials by interpreting library policy and striving for an outcome resulting in overall improved understanding of community stewardship and responsibility for library property.
4. Supervises twenty to twenty-five student employees; trains them in public services policies and processes, including use of essential computer systems.
5. Ensures the proper and efficient handling of library materials including re-shelving and processing of returned materials.
6. Contributes to the development and accomplishment of overall library goals and objectives; provides support to other staff members. |
