The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) seeks applicants for a Collections Assistant to support the
acquisition, documentation, management and outreach activities of the Collections department through
research, cataloguing, digitization, and collections care. The Collections Assistant also helps extend access
to the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society by creating and editing Collection Management
System (CMS) records for presentation online. This is a full-time, project (2,088 annual hours) position
located at the History Center in St. Paul, MN working through June 30, 2015. Renewal dependent upon
available funding and program need.
SUMMARY OF WORK: Responsibilities include: 1) support the documentation and management of
items in the Society’s permanent collection; and 2) support projects and activities that advance access to the
Society’s collections.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma plus two years experience or formalized training within a professional discipline
OR a bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, American studies or a related field plus one year full
time program experience or equivalent.
Knowledge of and experience with basic collections processing procedures.
Experience handling museum and archival items.
Demonstrated experience working with basic office software applications.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships with other staff and organizations.
Ability to lift and maneuver 30-40 pound boxes.
Knowledge of and experience working on collections management with electronic records.
General understanding of information technology applicable to www tools and networked applications.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
General knowledge of Minnesota history and historical resources.
Knowledge of MNHS collections.
Knowledge of MNHS Collection Management System.
SALARY: $3,000.00 monthly minimum
