The finalist for a position vacancy will be required to pass a criminal history investigation at County expense prior to beginning employment with Washington County.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Shelve library materials, shelf read collections and pull items from shelves needed to fill customers' hold requests. Empty book drops and bins and assist with various tasks to maintain the order and inventory of library materials. Assist library customers with registering for library cards and questions on borrowing library materials.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

HOURS / DAYS: Fourteen (14) hours per week, including various days, evenings, and weekends. Work schedules (hours and days) and location are subject to change based on department needs.

 GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This is clerical and customer service work of limited complexity and difficulty. Work involves specialized duties and recording of information based on knowledge gained through experience in applying library policies and procedures for the area of assignment. Decisions are made in terms of established policies, procedures and routines with more difficult or complex problems being referred to a supervisor or librarian. Instructions may be received on new projects, but employees generally work with some independence, using knowledge and judgment in completing duties. Work is reviewed in progress or upon completion and is evaluated for accuracy, adherence to established policies and procedures, productivity and customer service feedback.
 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and one year of paid work experience, which must include six months of direct customer service experience and six months experience using computers and software applications.

Knowledge of: English language, spelling, punctuation and arithmetic; current technologies and applications.

Ability to: Read, speak and comprehend English; type accurately; follow oral and written instructions; learn and use new technologies; adhere to policies, regulations, procedures and practices pertaining to the area of assignment; accurately sort and file library materials in accordance with designated filing systems; conduct oneself with tact and diplomacy when interacting with other employees and the public; be adept in dealing with a wide variety of demands at the same time; communicate effectively orally and in writing; report to work on a regular and timely basis.

Skill in: Customer service and current technologies and applications.
 EXAMPLES OF WORK:
1. Determines customer's initial need for service through screening and interprets eligibility for service based on library policies in person, by phone or on-line. Provides library service, explains basic library policies and refers customers to supervisor, librarians and/or other library programs or services.

2. Completes the library registration processes and enters required data into the Library Information System according to established library procedures.

3. Performs customer services for customers utilizing the multiple functions of the Library Information System, including inventory control of materials, adding and updating customer records, assessing the condition of returned materials, negotiating problem records with customers, charging for lost items, assisting in location of library materials and information and maintaining a safe and secure environment for customers and staff.

4. Packs and unpacks daily delivery bins; sorts and distributes daily deliveries, including mail.

5. Handles a variety of financial transactions, including cash register duties. Reconciles and verifies revenue reports.

6. Creates and runs a variety of statistical reports.

7. Returns checked-in books and other library materials to designated locations on shelves, bins, display racks, etc. Checks shelves and other locations to ensure that materials are in designated order.

8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions for this position are #'s 1-4 and 7 as stated in the "Examples of Work" listed above.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work schedules may be rotated among multiple library branch locations. Work may involve rotation from one or more service or work areas within a location. This position has continuous contact with the public and other staff and may often require handling multiple demands at once. The work environment may be noisy at times. Must be able to perform the following on an occasional to constant basis: talking, hearing, walking, standing, reading, kneeling, stooping, gripping, wanding, reaching up, reaching down and reaching out. Lifting, carrying and pushing requirement up to 20 pounds on a frequent to constant basis; for short periods of time, pushing and pulling book trucks up to 100 pounds daily. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computers, telephone, copy and fax machines, barcode scanners, book trucks and automated library systems. Additional physical/mental requirements may not be listed above, but are inherent in performing the position's essential functions.
